WORK FLIPPING

The one "real" question I would ask if I could to each and every single person posting their hatred towards Nassau Broadcasting on this site would be...do you really believe that the people working for Nassau hate you?

I don't believe they hate anyone.

I believe maybe some of the people who post here are venting their disappointment with radio again. Here comes a promising entrant into the marketplace, a new company who just might have a clue. After all, their web site says “A New Generation in Broadcasting”. And again the “local” listeners are let down. Just another out of state company bringing along 5 or 6 “formats in a can” because they are safe, or they test well in Wheeling, West Virginia so they will work in Vermont too or maybe it's just the only formats they know. Face it… today’s radio just isn’t interesting or alive. It’s a way for investment companies to dupe people out of money and not really have to work for it. Now before people rip me apart for not towing the company line, think about this; do you really believe radio is interesting or alive? I mean really. When all you have to do is bring in a computer, load up a pre-set pile of burned out tunes, boot the thing up, press AUTO and walk away – tell me, is that interesting or alive. And speaking of alive – when was the last time you heard LIVE radio between 6am to 12 midnight weekdays? Most likely at least 40% of that time is voice tracked from out of town and if you are lucky you can hear that same voice at the same time coming out of 3 or 4 radio stations at once. Contrary to popular belief, listeners aren’t THAT dumb. What it may come down to is this; maybe people have given up on radio. And the “venting” you see posted here is just a way of saying good-bye. It’s been difficult watching something die a slow death, reminds me of watching a close relative get eaten away by cancer and you can’t do a damn thing to stop it.

Are the employees of Citadel afraid of Nassau because they walked into their backyard and smoked them in their very first ratings period?

As I mentioned above, maybe listeners had hope for a new company entering the market and once again, after "smoking" the competition with what would sound like something new, would catch on pretty quickly that what they have been hearing is the same old stuff, packaged in a slightly different way. Whether you call it Jack or Frank or Bob or Hillary it’s the same old tired, safe crap in a can. Then people start complaining because you let them down – again.

Those are my thoughts. Thanks for listening...

Rip away…

I do agree that too much voicetracking can hurt a station, but if the talent is trained to research the local market and is in constant communication with the PD, then it can be effective. If the station (voicetracked jocks, "pre-set pile of burned out tunes", etc) sounds good, the listeners will respond, regardless of who owns the station. If the advertisers respond to the station, the company will make money, which is their objective.

You may know that the company is taking the formula used in Portland, Trenton and other markets, but do the listeners know that? And do they really care as much about that as the radio people do? I would say no.

In VERMONT, Nassau Broadcasting's worst-kept secret finally became a reality on Friday morning at 10, when top 40 WORK-FM (107.1 Barre) gave way to classic hits "Frank FM."

The new "Frank" is the latest in a growing batch of stations with that name across New England, from the original WFNK in Portland to newer "Frank" outlets in Nashua, New Hampshire and on Cape Cod. (That one's an adult hits station, unlike the others.) We're not sure yet how much of the WORK-FM airstaff will remain; the new website for Frank appears to have been hastily copied from yet another Nassau "Frank" down in Pennsylvania, right down to the "107.5 Frank FM" in the title bar...

Fybush says it all
Just plain cheap radio

And they still have the EEO info for Allentown, PA in the EEO Information link at the bottom of the page. But it goes nowhere... I could say something here but it would be cruel and we all know anyway. But the site they hastily copied from is in Boyertown, PA so I really don't understand how that could have happened...

Ahhh, well... yes I do... :)

Maybe they will hastily copy the staff from Pennsylvania too... ;)

Man, they only had Candy and TJ doing mornings and Doug Grant doing VT'd middays in house! Everything else was from NJ. It's not like they would have many to replace...

Only question in staff changes would if Tommy is coming back. They rest are staying.

WORK-FM now Frank-FM!!! What a joke. Sales were down by 50%? Maybe if they had a sales staff who actually knew what they were selling they would have done a little better. If you’re targeting young females on the air, the sales staff would need to know that these females are the ones they are trying to get into their clients businesses. They would need to be able to know who they are and what they are going through every day. They would need to not be elderly. All I know is if I were trying to be CHR I would be it and I would sell it, I would live eat and breathe it. The sales staff there just dealt with it and made excuses for it. I could be wrong but… Does this make sense?

Now, classic hits… The stuff is good, that I don’t think anyone could argue. But who the hell throws on Eric Clapton as they are getting ready to go out? Who would be jammin’ to Frank as they are having a party? Seems that central Vermont has turned stale, no night clubs, no good radio, no young radio. Thank God Kiss-FM 97.1 barely comes in. XM or Sirius that is the question.

Staff… Who knows, they are already bare bones on WORK. The only live radio left on there is a couple hours in the morning, I have not really listened since the switch but last I knew they only had 3 local people, TJ and Candy (You go girl for putting up with you know what) and Doug (keep up the downloads buddy!!! How do you spell Karma?) Doug voice tracks, and will probably do a lot better in this format as he has an extensive knowledge of everything to do with classic hits. TJ will just want to do anything to keep his job. He will adapt to the format out of necessity and will probably have a lot less headaches with such a somber station now, download a music log from some other station via email, merge it and presto! On the web site the Frank’s Airforce page says “Coming Soon” Hhmm I guess we’ll see. I think if anyone goes it would be Doug. He serves as the production manager and I just don’t see Candi and TJ being busy enough with the change. Drop him like it’s hot and add to Candi and TJ’s plate and save $. No offense, I would just put my money there if I were asked.

What now? I just can’t help but wonder if someone has plans to fill the void of Top 40 CHR in central Vermont. WXXX PLEASE TURN YOUR ANTENNA THIS WAY!

Doug is a good friend of mine. I've worked with him. He's not going anywhere. He's the most creative production director in Vermont.

Being a CHR means playing songs that people wanted to hear. There was no comparision from WXXX to WORK. Market size has nothing to do with it. When you have a music director that's lost this is what happens. Don't be surprised if you see another CHR station in the Montpelier-Waterbury-Barre Market. I heard of three radio groups that are looking at the feasibility of it and where they would put transmitters. Now I'm not saying that three stations will pop up but there is a 60% chance of one. I gathered this info. from a industry source when I was Boston in on Monday.
