Work in SLO-Santa Maria

I've been offered a job in SLO-Santa Maria. Can someone fill me in on the market? Is it a good market? Who are the players? Which stations dominate if any? Is anyone doing good radio on air? Any help would be appreciated!

Depends... are you going to SLO or Santa Maria? They are two separate markets, and uniquely different from each other.

SLO. Thanks for the reply. Any info would be helpful.

SLO is one of the nicest/coolest towns in America, expecially if Mom&Dad left you some ching to blow through. If you are of more modest means, it's still very nice. Beautiful area. Cal Poly/SLO adds a lot--things to do, smart people to hang with. Ever been to Ithaca or Charlottesville? But just 20 minutes from the Pacific

Santa Maria is more like Abilene. Or... Effingham? Or Dothan?

Many radio & television people who work in SLO live in Los Osos or Baywood Park, I know I use to share a bus ride to SLO with a KSBY 6 news anchor, in fact we did a spoof song for him "Another Anchor Rides The Bus". Cost of living is high; even in Los Osos, the apartment I rented in 91 for $350 is now $800, the house just off the bay in Baywood Park I rented for $400 is now over $2000, during the summer Los Osos can be 59 degrees covered in a blanket of fog and 100 degrees in SLO 12 miles away. Steve Martins movie My Blue Heaven was shot in and around SLO; the Williams Bro market you see in the movie was on Los Osos Valley Road, the rest was shot up in Atascadero. This link
http://slo.craigslist.org/apa/ should give you an ideal what its going to cost to live there, as you will see considering the low paying jobs (outside of Government) the area has to offer, the rent is pretty high.

If I win the lottery I would move back there in a heart beat!

You might be working in SLO, but chances are you won't be able to afford to live there. Although beautiful, California's Central Coast is one of the most expensive places in the nation. In SLO, only 9% of the population can afford a home, and rent is high because of a housing crunch caused by all the college students. Rent in Los Osos or Santa Maria is much more reasonable.

The biggest operator in the market is AGM. They are a fair company with good people, but meager pay and benefits- I worked there for a few years in the 1990s. Mapleton and ElDorado are the other players. I haven't worked for either but have friends who have. Mapleton gutted KOTR, one of the most loved radio stations in the 80's and 90's, and they're known for running lean and mean. El Dorado just bought the CC stable of stations in SLO-SM, and they're first order of business was to show a bunch of long timers the door. KCBX, the local NPR station, is excellent and very popular.

What's the number 1, 2 and 3 radio stations and who owns them? Any good battles? Who takes more money out of the market? Thanks for the other replies. It really is helpful.
