Working in radio.

> I just wanted to know, how many of you really work in radio?

I am. Board op with a long term goal to be a production director. But for now, I am ok with my place in the food chain. I have no desire to be a day to day, on air personality. Just began my second year in the trenches after being out of work for a while.

I currently work in TV. The pay, benefits, and hours are better. I've been in and out of it for the past 17 years. I've been an OM, a PD, MD, Air Talent... and sometimes all of the above.
______________

Seannizle,

I have been in the biz 20 years as of this September, 10 at the same station.

On the air every day, despite the best efforts of some on this board...

Worked in radio for 6 years, promotions and sales, up until this past June and am currently producing and writing radio and tv commercials for an ad agency here in town. Unfortunately, Radio is just too unstable of an industry to support a family. We all know what they say...you haven't worked in radio until you've been hired and fired at least twice!
Edited by promovet on 08/22/05 01:22 PM.

True -- firing is part of this job but it has never been
unstable enough over the years for me not to be able to
support my family.

If you have the talent and the friends in the biz,
you'll get a job somewhere when the current one ends.

Considering that the average income for a promotions director is about $40,000 a year, maybe a little more, that's jsut not comprable to what I make now in copywriting....You could be great at what you do and new management comes in and cleans house..there are only so many promotions positions available in a #5 market...I could support my family on $40k a year if I wanted to but I would be living paycheck to paycheck, and now I don't have to worry about that or changes in management. It's not about talent but more about friends as you stated..who you know not what you know...I've worked for both Clear CHannel and Infinity and those companies take some of the fun out of radio

They certainly do, if not ALL the fun--for both employees and listeners,

Been working in the media in one facet or another for the last 28 years-- either as a photographer for newspapers and other publications or working in broadcasting.... currently, decided to go in another direction with doing high school and college athletic events on the internet...

Like I always have said-- working in broadcasting beats working for a living!

Just a thought!
______________

I'm glad to see those of you who answered the question have been in the biz for sometime. I wanted to see the people in radio from those that have no clue what radio is all about. I'm new to the biz 2 years so far. I'm working as a Board Op and a Producer at 2 local station's (MK #5) and at a Network. My first gig was at KDL now known as casa. I'm hoping to talk to most of you. My goal in radio is to become a Production Director and V.O Talent.
