Working the Holidays

How about digging back in your memory of the years in radio when you had to work on Christmas Eve, Christmas day itself or even New Years eve. Before automation came along, many of use had to work on those days. Some wanted to...some didn't have a choice but those hours on those days were totally different then any other time of year. Listeners would call to wish you Merry Christmas, drop cookies off at the studios, send cards. Just want to pick your brains for any old memories of working the holidays.
 
Oh yes, worked many a Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, & New Years Eve..
I didn't mind, nothing like playing "22" versions of Jingle Bells, and all those other fine Christmas records as well, though I still cringe at "Grandma Got Runover By A Riendeer"...

I remeber one station I worked at, one of sales people brought a pumpkin pie in that she made, she forgot sugar!! YUK!!!!!!! LOL!!

How about when we had to work the holidays and were told we'd get "time and a half?" I'd always says "so what, you're paying me only half a day extra to work. I'd rather take the whole day off with a whole day's pay like the sales people and office staff." They'd look dumbfounded. I'd tell 'em double time is the only fair way and they'd look doubly dumbfounded.

When I first got into the business, working Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or even New Years day was something I did without too much thought. After the kids came along, Christmas day was out of the question although I would sometimes go in during the afternoon to get away from the inlaws. Thanksgiving day was fun because some of the stations I worked did play by play of the local high school games. I even did color at one once. I worked New Years eve at one station, counting down the hits to midnight. But it was sooooooo anti-climatic as I hit the cart with HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US. There was no one there to share it with. Good or bad, these are all fantastic memories of holiday duty in a fantastic mediam...radio.
 
How about the "Christmas Bonus" or "Lack of"... The first radio station I worked at, I was 17 and got a $25 bonus and a bottle of wine!!! YEAHHHHH!!!

Oh, Richie! My first fulltime job, 1980 in Allentown, Pa.....station's owner also owned 14 McDonald's in the area so I got $25 in McDonald's gift certificates--and they had to be used by the end of March!

I can recall getting a company tote bag a few years ago and a $25 gift certificate to Price Chopper!!!!! I gave the tote bag to my mom and the gift certificate i kept!!!

You mean you all actually got bonuses? Aren't too many stations these days that will give ANYTHING!!!!!! "just be grateful you've got a job" bonus!!!
