World Cup on the Radio

Were there any stations stations that carried the world cup? What it on ESPN Desportes or Univision?

ESPN Radio carried Saturday's US-England game. The playcaling was incomprehensible.

Maybe soccer is just not good on radio. I would think that the style would be similar to hockey, only slower, but I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on.

LOL, you'll get used to it in time! If you can watch a game with your TV on mute and your radio on, that's the best way to get into it.

Soccer is a big part of UK radio, with local stations fighting over the rights to cover games. This is because the Saturday afternoon games are not shown on TV and many other games are on premium cable/satellite channels. Luckily the World Cup is protected for over-the-air TV.

Soccer works well on radio. Unfortunately, it works best when they're actually calling plays. The US-England team on ESPN Radio seemed to want to try and explain the game, as if no one here has ever seen it before.

This ain't cricket! ???

The Futbol de Primera network has about 100 Spanish language stations covering all the games from start to the eventual finish. The world cup is not over...still in the first round.

Soccer isn't good on the radio. ESPN Radio just has the same TV commentary. The vuvuzela noise is more annoying than IBUZ.

are any of them in the US?

All of them. San francisco based Futból de Primera is the US rights holder for Spanish radio. Each country (including those in Latin America) has a separate rights holder for radio and for TV.

Really what that should say is that ESPN's treatment of soccer on the radio is not that good. Were you to hear any other English language soccer broadcast, such as England or Australia or New Zealand, you would find it very good and a whole lot better.
