Worst actor/actress

C'mon, we've all seen a few of them...actors & actresses so bad, you had to wonder "how did they ever get on television

For me it's:
Worst actor: Mike Farrel - M*A*S*H (honorable mention to David Caruso)

Worst actress: Bonnie Franklin - One day at a time (honorable mentions to Loretta Swit & Brooke Shields)

Who are yours?

I'll second the nomination of David Caruso. His portrayl of Horatio Whoever on CSI Miami is one of the worst I've ever seen - totally wooden and one dimensional. I guess he's trying to make Horatio seem controlled but dangerous - you know, like a wound up coil in danger of snapping...or something. But it just comes off like he's got a backache and hemorrhoids.

David Caruso also gets my vote for worst actor on TV; yet CSI-Miami is still on the air. Go figure!

As for worst actress I would vote for Erica Durance from Smallville. She's damn good looking but that's about it.

As for the worst show on TV it has to be Smallville. And yet the CW plans to carry season 10 next year.
Again...go figure! ::)

the other morning I had a MacGyver rerun on, and Mayim Bialik (Blossom) was the
guest star. My daughter, who is too young to remember either series, walked into the
room and said "Gee, Dad, that girl's acting his horrible!" And it was! Didn't stop them
from milking Blossom for five years.

Caruso has played Horatio for so long that it's freaky to see him as one of the deputies in "First Blood" now. You almost expect him to put those shades on while tromping through the woods and purr "Frannnnnk"...

Caruso was a much better actor years ago in season one of NYPD Blue. He seems to have taken the scenery-chewing bit to a new level in his current series...

I often wonder about kid actors. Some of them are HORRIBLE. Like Dawn Lynn who played Dodie on My Three Sons. I've been watching that show in reruns and am like "OH MY GOD, she's AWFUL." She isn't cute, can't act and barely can spit out her lines.

Especially since there are so many kid actors who do a decent job.

Bonnie Franklin's problem was overacting as much as bad acting.

With all the lousy movies and TV shows now days this thread has the potential to become the longest-ever on R-I.

...I didn't think Bonnie Franklin was that bad. Adam West -- now there was a lumberyard in the making!...

There's a "Worst Actor On Soaps" thread over on that devoid-of-pity TV site, and a few names that pop up a lot there are Eric Braeden (Y&R), Ronn Moss (B&B), Drake Hogestyn (Days Of Our Lives, I think), Deidre Hall (Days), and the guy who plays the mob boss on General Hospital (can't think of his name).

As far as prime time, how about Demond Wilson?

How can anybody have a "worst actors" thread without mentioning William Shatner? ;D

Huh! I guess Redd Foxx would have made anybody look bad on Sanford and Son, given that the show was basically a squeaky-clean showcase of his antics, outside of his natural Vegas habitat. Even James Earl Jones would have looked terrible in that show, I'm convinced.

...Shat's just a jerk, not a bad actor (catch the Roger Corman flick The Intruder sometime for proof that Shatner can be a damned good actor when he wants to be)...

The little girl from Small Wonder, Ritchie from Dick Van Dyke Show, the kid in All in the Family.

Loretta Swit was frightful in her bad acting, the girl that played Vickie on The Love Boat.

Joyce DeWitt, Pinkie Tuscadero, Ted McGinley

Nicholas from 8 is Enough.

I can cut the child actors some slack,..they're kids, and probably don't know any better...

I forgot how bad Demond Wilson was..if you listen close, you can hear him flub lines..(I guess the director is as much to blame for that)

As much as I liked M*A*S*H, the later episodes can be almost painful to watch: the one where Margaret gets laryngitis..apparently losing her voice also makes her talk like Tonto ("must get to Tokyo")

Nah, I wouldn't include him on such a list. His performances on Star Trek were, of course, over the top. But he did much better work on other shows (Twilight Zone comes to mind). He has also cultivated a pretty decent following from all his tongue-in-cheek Priceline ads and his other somewhat recent appearances on Boston Legal and that show he has on Bravo (I think).

Leave Bill alone - he does fine.

By the way, I notice that most of the examples given are from many years ago. I suspect it's because there's so much reality crap on now that scripted programming is more limited and many of us aren't watching as much of it as before. But if you want to see truly bad acting, spend some time watching the toxic sludge that MTV and VH1 are pumping out each day. Those squeaky 'hos' make Loretta Swit look like an academy award winning actress. Wow.

Too lazy to look up names so I'll just list characters:

2nd Lionel - The Jeffersons
JJ and Thelma - Good Times
Radar, Igor, Nurse Kelly - MASH
Cindy - 3's Company
Bobby - Taxi (worse than Tony!)
Monroe - Too Close for Comfort
Mrs. Olson and her son - Little House on the Prairie (just include everyone on that show except for Ma and the two schoolteachers)
The two husbands and the kid on One Day at a Time - and Julie wasn't so great either.
Sandra and husband and the other husband on the Cosby Show
The cast of Webster (Susan Clark was an Emmy winning actress in the 70s - this ruined her career)
Woody and girlfriend on Cheers
Boone and Shannon on Lost
Everyone on The Ropers (they were awful on there but they were good elsewhere)
Kimberly on Diffrent Strokes (and she had a girlfriend on there who was in a Friday the 13th and she was awful too)
Jan Smithers on WKRP (hotter than Loni but a comic dud)
Most of the cast of Happy Days

Caruso is great. He has done other things than CSI Miami. Fact is, now that he doesn't have his one liners and sunglasses and the beginning of the show, I've kinda lost interest. It is the part he is playing folks, not his acting ability.

I believe we hadn't heard much from Alex Karras either since "Websiter" left the air.

...I think that's called "semi-retirement" ;-) ...
