Worst Broadcast Day... Ever

All of these stories are GREAT! ;D

I remember my gig at WAAF-FM in Worcester in the late 70s. Whenever a jock had a personal plumbing emergency---the 18 minute version of Led Zeppelin's STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN was instantly cued up. That usually bought whoever was on the air enough time to...err...
clean out the pipes! ::)

I did a very brief TV gig at WGME in High school as the weekend teleprompter operation. I inserted a picture of Porn star Samantha Fox in with the news script. Poor dave Silverbrand was the anchor and the picture can up after a story about a fatal car accident! Dave just about busted out laughing on the air. They cut to a break and Dave sprung over the set and chased me around the studio! If you were ever in their studio, you know it was huge! The following Monday I sat in Jim Sanders office for a good hour getting double teamed by him and GM Dave King! After that I was sentenced to bulking tapes and was barred from the news set area during the live newscasts!
I punked Jon Hussey the old engineer @ WTHT packed his station van with packing peanuts and then wrapped the van with shrink wrap! 4 rolls of shrink wrap while it was parked in the garage! Then with the help of a photog we video taped John and his reaction!! I can still hear him bitching about which one of the jocks he thought did this too him!!

HAHA! Well 12 In a Row! You must have no SENSE of Humor. ;D

Let me guess. You are unemployed! :p

Your guess is quite incorrect. I am VERY employed.

I do enjoy a good laugh, but not at someone else's expense AND putting the integrity of your station and the reputation of you and a fellow employee on the line.

If a co-worker is clueless about N.E. sports, or anything else, how bout taking the high road and teaching him or her?

Doesn't take that long. Hell, I did that at my gig last night with the long version of "Everybody Have Fun Tonight."

12 in a Row...get a sense of humor and stop taking yourself so seriously. This is radio for Gods sake. I'm sure you're a real SERIOUS radio guy and all but drop the attitude.

Dude, really relax we get it you eat, sleep and drink radio....We got that, but this is a relaxing board Tim Moore is not logged on so you don't need to worry about a consultant!

Sorry Tim! :)

The question is: DOES THAT CO-WORKER YOU MENTIONED WANT TO LEARN FROM PROFESSIONALS WHO HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE AND ON-AIR EXPERIENCE? Or is it easier to blow off someone who falls into the old broadcaster category and do his (or her) own thing absolutely clueless? ???

So sorry if the comment came off with a attitude. Certainly wasn't meant that way.

Point was, playing games in the studio is fun, screwing with the on air product and a co-worker is not.

Argy, I totally agree....if the co-worker wants to learn, it's rewarding for both.
If they don't, eventually they will find themselves flipping burgers.

With any luck, the other sports reader learned a valuable lesson about proofreading. I learned a long time ago to check my board before firing off a button. Back in the turntable days, when the practical-joke-loving jock who was on before me told me "I cued up your next 45" that generally meant the first thing to check was whether or not the turntable was set to 33.

My worst moment was my junior year at Syracuse. Our station was being run out of an off campus house for the year while they renovated the building where our old (and new) studios were/are. We had just gotten a new board, and the engineers (students) had just wired everything up.

As the ops manager, I was covering an un-covered overnight shift, circa 1am. A friend of mine called, and I was talking to him through the mic on the board. We were discussing a girl I liked, and, in R-rated terms, the things I'd like to do to/with her. The other request line rang, "Dude, you know your conversation is going on the air." I brushed it off, figuring it was one of my buddies pranking me. 3 calls later, I realized it wasn't.

I'm not sure which was more fun, having to suspend myself the requisite two weeks for swearing on the air, or having to explain the GM and VP of Business why.

That rule about not swearing in front of any microphone, in case it might be live, well, it exists for a reason.

back in the day, when I was still in school, I worked part time at a station that did live baseball games on the am. well one day I was board opping the game and fell asleep. I beleive it was the 6 inning. I was awoken by the sportscasters.....back at the station....an hour after the game ended....they were standing over me trying to wake me up. We didnt get a single call about the hour of dead air. Since then I drink ALOT of diet coke while at work. Amazingly I wasnt fired. Maybe its cause when I feel asleep I had already done a 5 hour shift on the sister station.

Gee, I would post something about my "Worst Broadcast day...Ever" but I don't know where to start. ;D

Erie..

My point was this. A jock shouldn't let his or her personal frustrations (like being locked out of the studio or inside a bathroom) get out over the airwaves so listeners can hear them.

I disagree. EVERYONE has bad days. A good jock can take personal experiences and make them entertaining to fit the format they are in while making a connection with the listeners (without sounding like they are bitching). Getting locked out is a FUNNY story...hating your boss is relatable...waking up late...losing money in the vending machine...I could go on with everyday things that happen to everyone and good jocks know how to make good content out of those things.

There was one day I let my emotions run away with me... a little bit. I wouldn't call it my worst day in broadcast but suffice it to say it prompted an angry advertiser to threaten to pull his ads.

Picture it though: There's like this huge high-school soccer game, championship, right? And no one and nothing is set up to give you the outcome. Then you have your phone ringing off the hook with folks outraged that you don't know. You get the info from a couple of callers and decide that it's valid. Next talk up and for every ten minutes afterward you announce it with some REALLY EXCITING music bed in the back. Then at the half hour you do the same thing again, only this time, tag it with "Like I care". Yeah, so I didn't really vent to the listeners until AFTER I had to apologize so they might understand what it was to be in the dark about something so important.

Not professional, but I figured it would catch some attention and it did. So, that may have gotten people to start talking about what the horrible night jock said on PNH last night and maybe attract more listeners, so what works out better?

By the way, HAPPY EASTER!! I'm officially off my moratorium now as I promised God to stay away from Radio-Info for lent. My sacrifice has now been meted and will be regularly perusing per normal routine. ;)
