In your opinion, what do you are the WORST country radio stations?

IMO: KYKX in Longview, TX. Enough said!

by worst do you mean things like too many ads, annoying personalities, lousy music,
too much repetition/narrow playlist?

yes

WKHK in Richmond VA. IN the 80's and 90's it was live and local 24/7. It was interactive and had a big playlist. It was bought by Cox and I assume you would know what they did to it. Sure they got more power and a new stick---------but the programming is COX---- :'(

I took a listen on their internet stream, and of all the speeded up country stations there is I think its safe to say they are the worst.

A bad one that comes to mind is WKLB 102.5 in Boston. They speed up the songs, the playlist is very limited, lots of commercials, and they play the new songs months after all the other stations.

Cox Radio is proof that Arbitron ratings are like marijuana: The more you suck, the higher you get.

Re short playlists (grrrr):

What about starting a rumor that the length of a man's playlist is equal to the length of his.....

I think that would actually reduce the number of songs on the playlist. No one would want 300 anymore.

A stations playlist is often the same size as the IQ of the person who sets the playlist size to begin with.

Oh, please! Do you actually program a station?

While there is no "magic" number of songs to play, generally speaking...shorter is better.

And to the poster who rants about Richmond...Most of the Cox country stations are market leaders or quite close to it...

Cox stations are boring to radio people because they are so heavily researched and structured, both musically and formaticlly. But it's a formula that works, their stations tend to do very well. When I listen to Cox stations and the way they pound liner cards and positioning statements it very much reminds me of radio in the 80s. Cox proves those old radio rules and ways of doing things that most have forgotten still work in 2009.

Well when it comes to country radio in Detroit. It Sucks!. What once was the funnest and entertaining radio station in the motor city, 99.5 WYCD is just losing it. They are very slow at adding new music. The song "Runaway" by Love and theft was released in April. They just started playing it this week. I can think of a ton of other songs that the same thing has happend. Also there imaging is pretty poor. It used to great about two years ago, but it just went downhill. Also the DJ's are getting very old most of them have been there for years, and I thinks its about time they start looking for some fresh, new talent. Now I have nothing but respect to Dr. Don, he is a great personality, he's funny and always keeps me laughing. But his morning show is just awful now. There is way to much music (about 9-10 songs an hour) and there is very little interaction with the listeners, and its just the same old, same old every morning. I don't think it is him, I bet it is the PD Tim Roberts. I wiss they would go back to the way they were, where they would actually have fun on-air and interact with listeners, and just be entertaining! But its 2009, and radio has changed for the worse within the last few years.

I have to disagree with you about WKLB. When Reba's new single "Strange" was released they had it on the air within a couple of days. I listen quite a bit, and this is common for them. I also think they have fantastic personalities who actually contribute to the show, and are not just a bunch of liner readers.

For the worst, WWYZ 92.5 in CT. There playlist is so limited, they play that song "Trashy Women" at LEAST twice a day. I've heard the jocks reading the same exact liners day to day as well. "Did you know Billy Currington was a fitness trainer before he was a singer?" Last time I was in CT for a week, I heard two different jocks read it the SAME WAY!

I agree with AHLPOR that WKLB is NOT one of the worst country stations. They are not known as being especially slow or conservative on new music. They have a good list of currents. Plus they seem to have a large library of gold, not just the played out song all country stations play. Plus check out their ratings. Very impressive. I can remember back when Boston didn't have a country station and was considered one of the worst potential country markets. WKLB has proven that wrong.

Somebody mentioned speeding up songs. That brings back a great memory for me. I worked for a station who's direct competitor speeded up songs. Few people even noticed, but it drove me crazy. I told our morning man and he ran with it and made it a huge ordeal. He asked listeners "should we speed up our songs like the other station does?". The listeners were passionate about not speeding up the songs. They say don't mention the competition, but in this case it worked. The station speeding up music had their worst book ever and started on a long downward road before evntually changing formats.
