Worst Ideas in Oklahoma City Radio

I heard on 98.9 KYIS on Friday that they are using the position "Best of the 80's, 90's and today" or something close to that. I guess it has been a couple of months. Time for Kiss to come up with a new identity again. It reminded me of a couple of years ago when they adopted what may have been the lamest idea in OKC radio in a while. That would be "98.9 KISS-FM the POP MUSIC CHANNEL." HORRIBLE. Nothing better than hearing two guys pushing 60 (or at least they sound like it) Jack and Ron selling the station as the POP MUSIC CHANNEL.

Just wondering what you think some of the worst moves in recent OKC radio were?

Yes. It'll work GREAT for KMGL when the book comes out for the Christmas we just endured also.

What didn't work great for Bob-FM is putting Christmas music on a classic rock/ classic hits radio station. Christmas is a great audience builder for AC and sometimes hot AC stations. It's a nut-buster for a station like Bob.

Bad, bad idea. They're still paying ratings-points for the small revenue gain in the during the 2006 Christmas season to this day.

Something else to remember about all Christmas is that usually only one station, at most, will benefit from it. I remember in 2001 when KMEO, KVIL and KDMX went all Christmas in Dallas and all three hit record lows. I believe it was the same year when WGRR and WVMX in Cincinnati flipped to Christmas. WGRR did quite nicely while WVMX hit a low and recovered poorly. You don't see multiple successes very often. So, with KMGL having that market covered, there was no reason for Bob to do it. Most surveys indicate fewer than 10% of people want all Christmas for a month. That's just not enough audience to split up.

I think in October a station should go ALL HALLOWEEN!!! Ghostbusters, Monster Mash, Somebody's Watching Me, The Time Warp, Purple People Eater, Macarena, and so much more!!!

I am kidding. haha

A weak positioning statement, in my opinion, doesn't qualify as a radio disaster.

I know that the radio business has changed over the years and media in general are feeling the influence of the Internet and satellite radio. However, I'm still upset over the destruction of heritage call letters/stations. We've lost legendary station KOMA-AM 1520 to KOKC, a news talk station that struggles for an identity and audience. KOKC has been a money pit that was created without researching the marketplace. They were doing much better just simulcasting KOMA's FM signal instead of trying to make it KTOK Part II.

Even though the call letters were preserved, the loss of country station KEBC - Keepin' Everybody Country - was very sad and CC has yet to recover. KKNG just moved into the void left by the local legend and everything post-KEBC has been a disaster (95X, KQSR and the Buzz). Now, that's what I'd call a bad decision.

I don't know why but I think a GOOD IDEA for AM talker in oklahoma city would be MEDICAL during the day and AUTOMOTIVE during the night or vice versa, since OKC has the most hospitals and car lots.

KTOK was a much better programmed station when it didn't rely on the crutch of nearly all syndication, nearly all the time.
Remember shows by Steve Neumann? The late night host that called himself the codger or somethings/

The afternoon host was great and made for some lively debates.

Now, with small exceptions, its a snoozefest of partisan bickerers.
