Worst local sportcasters ever

While responding to the Thor Tolo topic, I thought this would make for an interesting subject. Let me preface this by saying we have been fortunate to have some of the most legendary sportscasters ever here in Pittsburgh. Prince, King, Cope, Lange and Savran to mention a few. But we have had our share of ineptness as well. I mentioned such gems as Tolo, John Sanders, Kent Derdivanis, John Fedko and I just thought of the legendary Alan Cutler. Who am I missing? Please feel free to add to the Pittsburgh Chapter Sportcasters Hall of Shame.

Fast Eddie was horrible. Wasn't he involved in some sort of illegal activity either here or in another market? Jail time perhaps? If anyone knows, please refresh my memory.

Worst for mispronounsing words, confusing players with each other, and attacking long hair on players------------The Gunner

Best for spirit, intangibles, and memories---------------------------------------------------------Bob Prince

Yes, he did prison time for a couple of financial scams on the west coast.

At the risk of getting taken to task for not naming names, I think the worst sportscasters ever are the ones who only got on the air on rare occaisions to do play-by-play for high school sports. I almost never listened to high school sports on the radio except when it was a game that involved my own kids or my nephews back in the late 80's & early 90's. That meant tuning in some dinky AM station that I never would have listened to otherwise, and listening to people I'd normally never listen to. I don't know where they dug up some of those sportscasters. Maybe they were freelance writers, or high school kids, or the station's janitor. A couple decades later, I don't remember their names. But I remember thinking that if I didn't have a son or nephew playing in the game, I'd prefer to be listening to anything else.

And to think some of those people were making $10 per game (and maybe a Burger King coupon or two).

What does that have to do with anything? Good is good, bad is bad. Duh! What difference does it make if the people doing a bad job weren't getting paid much? Did I miss something? Did someone say this thread was about listing the worst local sportscasters ever who didn't work cheap?

I do believe Biz, that Boss was saying that it's hard to find "good" sportscaster when that is all they are getting paid.

I understood that. I do believe that what I was saying is that though it might be true, it's still beside the point. The reason why those people were among the "Worst local sportcasters ever" doesn't make them any less bad.

yes, Kurt Angle probably knocks Rocky Blier out of the top spot

How about that guy who pulled his stunt when Bob Prince was fired? Remember him? He was from WBVP and when he didn't get the job he lock himself up in a hotel somewhere around there and the cops had to drag him out!!!

None of that is close to being true.

Are you referring to Bill Cameron?

As a publicity stunt in 1994, Cameron supposedly locked himself in the studio and played "Rock 'til You Drop" by Def Leppard for two days straight until the station- whose AM counterpart WAS WBVP- changed its format to "106.7 The Force," which played a playlist of popular hard rock music that cemented its status forever as the greatest radio station of all time

At least in my opinion.

He's not talking about the Cameron stunt. The person he's referring to never worked at WBVP and the sequence of events he's suggesting never happened.

Right B. R.! It never happened. Bob Prince didn't get fired and the person referred to wasn't interested in Prince's position and the cops were there just to hide out from the chief of police and enjoy a few donuts together and play cards! Yep, that's how it happened!
