Worst local TV Newscast ever.

I Vote For KRON-TV Channel 4 San Francisco.

The odor they mention must be their newscast. ;D

But once these guys get more experience, they'll be able to get a better job in a bigger market...like Glendive, Presque Isle, or North Platte. :D

I haven't seen a newscast this bad since WAEO-TV Rhinelander WI or pre-TBN KPAZ-TV Phoenix circa 1974.

Yeah but consider the point of origin - The U.S. Virgin Islands.

If that was someplace like Miami or Tampa/St. Pete, I can see the the concern. But there's no concern here. KUAM 8 on Guam & KHNL 8 in Honolulu, HI are much the same way.

Cheers :D

Even on the mainland there are some newscasts of similar quality -- one known example is WBKB in Alpena, Michigan; while it is a great place for a budding anchorperson to get their foot in the door, the quality is sub-par by larger-market standards.

Exactly.

And come to think of it, it's sub-par even by the stations in Honolulu HI considering some of the companies who have invested there (Hearst-Argyle & Emmis come to mind here).

Cheers :D

Back in the late 70s when I was stationed at Adak Naval Station in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, the local Armed Forces TV station (Channel 8, incidentally) had a live 6PM newscast (in black and white) that was done by local Navy and Coast Guard personnel. A few of them went on to become quite professional, but you could always tell the junior ones. Some of them were so bad, that they were mocked at the local enlisted club. Unfortunately, back in 1977-78 personal VCRs weren't widely available, and those that were on the market were the earliest models (Beta or VHS) costing over $1000. I wish I could have recorded some of those old broadcasts...I almost felt sorry for a couple of the "anchors" they were so nervous and shaky.

Nowadays, for those who can get Pentagon channel, you'll see most AFTV anchors are relatively slick and professional.

Let's be honest here: this is about on par with what you would see on a cable access channel.
These people don't know any better. There is likely no one at that station who has worked in a big time network affiliate newsroom and knows how it should be done. If they could hire someone like that to take over and fix things, they would look a lot better in short order.

Poster djj recently provided this link on the California board - a 1972 newscast at sleepy KFTY (Channel 50) in Santa Rosa - about 60 miles north of San Francisco. It was a bit amateurish, but definitely a cut above the Virgin Islands newscast.

Actually - the anchor - Stan Atkinson, went on to a very distinguished career as a news anchor and reporter in Sacramento, until his retirement a year or two ago

Getting back to the CH8 NEWS. Wow that West Small is THEEE go to guy. Why is a new storage facility news? It was more like an unpaid free commercial. Hopefully they will learn to kill the audio while shooting the 'B' roll. Ouch, that really hurt to watch. Maybe we will see them in the larger markets as the O/O cut back on their budgets and slash their high paid professional reporters and anchors.

And that newscast contains what has to be the first sportscasting job for ESPN's Jon Miller. But is that Gene Shalit doing the weather under another name? ;D

Too weird. I started taking notes, due to my amazement...

News open--
You think we could level out the title card? Probably not, since it appears to be
on tape, what with the head alignment problems. And what's with the anchor
and the "crew headphones" in the staged shot?

Lead story--
One word: headroom!!!

Studio package--
I will say it was nice and tight into/out of the :05 SOF.

Jon Miller/sports--
A lot thinner dude, had some hair on top, and...his voice must have changed
again later in his 20s. ???

Denny Ryan/weather--
He could be related to Albert H. Fogleman III, whom Tucson weather watchers
in the late '70s/early '80s might remember. No, we won't discuss Alfo and Kathy. ;D

VW Campmobile spot--
Three rifles as part of the deal? In Cali? What is this, the SLA van? ;)

Miller was 21 at the time of that newscast. He was losing his hair even then (I can empathize. ;D ), but if you look closely, you can tell it's definitely him. It was in fact his first job out of college. He joined the Oakland A's as play-by-play man a couple of years later.

In suburban San Francisco, yet.

Slow news day, perhaps?

St. Croix is a small island in the Caribbean, probably not a whole lot happens there, other than crime which Wes Small seems to be on top of.

I watched a few other of their videos on YouTube, it's more of a collection of live on tape interviews than a traditional newscast. I saw an interview with a gospel group and some entertainer who was going to appear at a night club. Wes interviewing a coach who went on a rant because there was a shortage of money to send the team to the British Virgin Islands to play.

It's a market completely different than any on the mainland, you really can't compare it to any other newscasts. And that is the only local newscast in the Virgin Islands. The local NBC station carries WNBC local news from NYC, the local CBS doesn't seem to carry any local news.

Their schedule is even worse

Oy -- that station is practically overreliant on infomercials, even pre-empting "All My Children" for at least one of them, and Jimmy Kimmel delayed an hour for an infomercial block. If this was a station on the mainland with competing, more-well programmed stations as its competition, even Ion would have a run for the money.

They carry All My Children at 6pm.
