I'll ignore the ignorant comment and say that KRBE playing Sophie B Hawkins into Justin Timberlake into mid-90s Sheryl Crow makes it the worst story of 2006.

I second that.

DJboutit3, I'll second YOUR comment. There's nothing "ignorant" about it, unless youre a self-righteous
twit. First of all I AM Mexican, so burn your little race cards immediately. Second, I have friends at
MEGA, so I'm glad they're enjoying success, but these guys would do well with or without that signal.

That out of the way, the switch of Houstons historic Rock 101 to a Spanish format was among the saddest
events in local radio. If you went to San Antonio and took its largest Spanish station and converted it
to French-speaking C&W, in a city with a deeply Spanish heritage, you would be taking a chunk of its culture. Likewise the loss of Rock 101 to a foreign language station, (gasp! Spanish is a "foreign" language???) (this is how far we have come) is a loss of Houston's culture. Houston people have already lost their accent.

Just as sure as Mexicans fought next to Sam Houston, Spanish culture IS a part of Texas. (not that I need
cowtow to anyone, thats just a fact, remember I am Hispanic) If you bulldozed the area around Harrisburg
& Navigation, and filled it with yuppie lofts, and the old neighborhood was gone, you get the same effect.
There are countless examples of places where Spanish influence IS the culture of Houston.

Someone came here a while back and asked a perfectly good (and rather funny) question: How come only
Mexicans get Oldies in Houston? Everybody jumped on him like they were the Diversity Police. It IS sad
that while you can hear Spanish classics here in Texas, In the United States, you can no longer hear classic,
roots of Rock n Roll & MOTOWN hits, except for a few. Classic BLACK artists are also a huge part of
American culture. Shouldnt they be heard?

DJboutit, your opinion is valid, and deserves to be heard, just like anyone else in America. The PC Police have no jurisdiction here, so the rest of you can get over it.

That's all well and good, but wasn't the KLOL flip in 2004?
I don't remember any stations in Houston switching to a Spanish language format in 2006, did they?

There was however one Spanish station that flipped to Gospel... Praise 92.1.

remember Emily Latella/Patella? Gilda Radner playing a senile old lady... "oh well, nevermiiind."...
I thought we were talking about the "presidential 'erection' "....

I still want some American Oldies, but hoooray for Gospel, Kevin! Boooooo overly sensitive people.
(wearing my Red Stripe---hahaha)

The "ignorant" comment was more to the fact no station flipped to Spanish in 2006. No race card here so It's Time can get off his soapbox.

My nomination for the worst of 2006 - the end of David Sadof's "High Fidelity".

Too bad that KIOL doesn't put it on Sunday nights. It would quadruple their ratings.

Damn it! Every "best of" or "worst of" has to turn political, doesn't it!?

And someone probably has them on their "best of" list as well... ::)

Actually, I don't. I have no admiration for W&J. But this post is the Worst of 2006, not a place to take shots at people you don't like. Some members of this board take every opportunity they can get to take cheap shots at personalities that they do not like for some reason or another. While I do enjoy casual discussion, and the mostly informative nature of these boards, I do tend to sometimes get frustrated and wonder why I'm discussing radio with a bunch of 12 year olds, some of whom having never worked in radio a single day of their lives, but swear up and down, and more sadly, truely believe that they can program a station better than a certain PD, or know what is best for a station. Is it impossible to have a discussion about radio that is purely factual and not immature? Apparently on these boards, it is.
