Worst PD's in the market?

We've talked about the best and the worst owners in the market....Anyone care to nominate their choice of the Worst PD's in the market? (and why?)

I can think of a few ex-PD's who worked for Curt Gowdy. A string of total incompetents.

I'm curious why that is the case.

Did Curt's management refuse to pay for good talent?

Or was Curt's management a poor judge of talent?

PD's are powerless nowadays. Everything is handed down from corporate and they just implement the plan. It used to be that the PD would control the budgets for talent, research, marketing and promotion. The air talent and music would be interwoven between all the departments. The PD called most of the shots as to what went over the air and the sales department would sell it.

It's just not that way anymore. Marketing and promotions were shipped off to sales years ago. Research was one of the first budget cuts. Even music logs are sent down from corporate MD's. And most talent is voicetracked anyway. Most PD's can't hire or fire key local live talent like a morning show without management's approval.

So what's left? Nothing. PD's are basically just pencil pushing middle managers. Best or worst? It really doesn't matter.

All very good points. There's certainly some leeway in certain situations, but you've pretty much nailed it.

Cooper! I have been wondering for a while if that was you. I never got to experience firsthand the tragedy of your reign as Todd Martin liberated me from CHR Hell during his administration. Still alive and well (and Nights) at The Rock Of Bangor, thanks for all the free CD's for Hot Mix.

Worst PD in the WORLD? Mr. Marbles at Catamount Radio in Rutland! Old, out dated promotions, such as Name that Noise, they were goodin 1972, just like the time and temp that he preaches and excels at. Not a creative bone in his body. He is so out of touch with radio-reality, that it is almost funny! If you think I'm kidding, holdl your breathe until WSYB wins a sports award WITHOUT the talent that he kicked out.
