Worst places to DX

Lawppy said:
As far as AM radio goes, probably any hotel room on the Las Vegas strip. At night, I could only hear KDWN and KXNT. The rest of the stations were nothing but a very heavy buzzing sound.

I don't think I got those two stations. Definitely right about the buzzing noise. I was at the Marriott near Planet Hollywood in 2008.

AM:

Worst:
Las Vegas Strip at night. Daytime brought in all local signals OK. Nighttime is indeed a disaster, though. It is true that you will probably get two stations at best during nighttime hours.

Best:
Outer Banks, NC has excellent AM coverage day and night. WOKV from Jacksonville is a regular 24/7. WCBS is pretty much a regular, too.

FM:

Worst:
The entire Miami/Ft. Lauderdale market is awful for even local broadcasters. Combine dozens of pirates on adjacent frequencies, a crop of legal translators, about 15 class C's on three adjacent towers which absolutely blankets the band between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. West Palm Beach stations have a tough time making it the 40 miles to Ft. Lauderdale! Only DX I got down there was strong tropo from Ft. Pierce which overran the pirates on 92.7.

Best:
Overall year-round listening goes to most of the Blue Ridge Parkway in VA. You can pick up most of the Richmond signals from 90+ miles away as if they're locals from Lexington to just south of Winchester. NC stations from Raleigh, Greensboro, Fayetteville, and Greenville boom in when there's even a hint of tropo. Mind you, most of the parkway in VA is on the eastern side of the mountains which allows for good views and FM listening.

A "honorable mention" should go to the Atlantic coast between Charleston and Cape Canaveral outside of the big cities. FM DXing is an 8-9 month regular occurence in these parts. It's not uncommon to get FM's from the Carribean during E-skip and long-distance tropo is pretty much a nightly thing from April-October.

Updating this.

Worst place for AM: I haven't really thought of one. With my equipment it is usually good. Oh, the hotels in the immediate Washington area (inside the beltway). I've stayed at a few where you had to be by a window in order to get anything more than the strong local stations.

Best place for AM: the area around Nassau in the Bahamas. On a good radio there daytime, you can get most of the Bahamas island chain, South Florida AMs (I listened to 940 coming in strong at Atlantis), Ft. Lauderdale AMs and other far-away places. At night though you can barely hear any Americans except for the close-by Miami stations (at least when I was there).

Best place for FM: Along the Atlantic coast on a cruise ship out of Charleston. One night off the FL coast last year (I believe there was some DX), I could pick up all the Charleston stations, most of Savannah's, a lot of Columbia channels, and basically anywhere on the FL coast. AM is like that too daytime. 730 Charleston carried for hundreds of miles.

Worst place for FM: What I said before, Isle of Palms.

"Worst place to DX"?
Any place where the city has decided to not fix or replace malfunctioning streetlights.

You can draw a map of the ones Salt Lake City has "abandoned", by just listening to the radio. All the bad ones buzz horribly.

I was going to post a link to the map the City provided, but it's not available any more. It seems to line up with the noisy areas, though.

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Tennessee in My opinion. The Mountains seem to get in the way

The worst place to DX is particularly anywhere in the Pocono region of Northeastern Pennsylvania(mainly, the metro areas of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in general). Reason being is that there are too many translators all over the FM dial! To add insult to injury, once you get into these cities, you will receive major interferences from the stronger stations because the transmitters are all five miles away from the city(you can easily see them situated on top of the mountain, especially if you are living in Wilkes-Barre). Just over on the NEPA board, there's supposed to be a new station launching over on the 100.7 frequency, which mostly WLEV or sometimes WHUD can be heard wherever there's tropo(I also got Star 100.7 from Pittsburgh a few weeks ago). That new station is believed to be relaying an AM sports station.

This area is situated with religious translators, LPFMs, and oldies relays from AM stations! This has to be the lousiest place to DX ever in the state of PA. I think the rural areas of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre could be a good location since there are a lot less translators there.

Gatlinburg is actually pretty good if you are on a high floor of one of the hotels. FM comes in nicely. The last time we were there ('05), I got 97.1 and 95.5 out of Nashville along with a few others.

The worst place to DX has turned out to be inside my own home!

My wife has a brother who is a very "giving" person, but his gifts usually require a lifestyle change (ie: the electric toothbrush, etc.) that will always "improve" the way we live despite what we are used to doing. ::). Last Christmas, he replaced a lot of our incandescent bulbs with CFLs - which ran havoc with my AM reception. This past summer, he finished it off by installing LEDs all over the place, which put buzzing on my FM DXing.I can't get (visually) angry with him; they were nice gifts, and we ARE saving money, but we're talking a about really mixed blessing here. :-X

I believe he is happy now, but if I want to get good DX, I literally have to leave home. :p
