The McDougald family has quite the radio legacy. Their father, Walter, contributed the chosen slogan for Statesboro, Georgia..."Where Nature Smiles", which later became the nucleus for the WWNS call sign.
Both Worth and Mike worked briefly with WWNS when it debuted in December, 1946.
Worth, along with brothers Don and Horace, bought WWNS in 1958, and operated the station for a number of years.
Horace died in the early 60's, and his broadcast involvement was limited to his one-third interest in WWNS, Inc.
Mike went on to work for WSB. He and Chuck McClure built WCHK in Clanton, and then he, along with Charlie Smithgall, owned WAAX in Gadsden, Alabama. He later bought WRGA in Rome, which had also been a Smithgall station at one time. Today, he's a honcho with Georgia Public Telecommunications.
After selling WWNS to Billy Woodall and Cecil Grider in 1975, Don, at one time or another, owned and operated WXLX (he changed the calls to WWAM) in Milledgeville, WSYL in Sylvania and a station (WVOV, I think) in Danville, Virginia. Don was also in the broadcast brokerage business. Today, Don and Betty live in Billy Graham's neighborhood...high above Black Mountain, NC, at Montreat.
