WOSM-103.1-Ocean Springs 100kW CP

I just noticed that WOSM's 100kW CP will expire on 12/8/2008. This upgrade is significant, as it would provide a city grade signal into Mobile.

Is Mr. Cooper planning to build this out or let it lapse?

if it expires, they can presumably just reapply.. but I hope it doesn't expire..... that will be a nice big signal.

They may already be on the 18-month extension. According to radio-locator.com, the CP was issued on December 2, 2005.

If WMXZ could move their transmitter west from Freeport to one of the downtown Fort Walton towers and stay a C2 at 50KW they would add Pensacola coverage. Would this be possible if the WOSM CP expires and Qantum sneaks in an application?
WMXZ changed their COL from Defuniak Springs to Valparaiso a couple of years ago with no change in facilities. Could this have been their plan all along?

Not so much.

99.5 is a C2 in Ft. Walton, and their 60 dBu (1 mV/m) doesn't quite make it to Pensacola. I can't imagine that the signal in-town is very good at all.

With the massive tropospheric ducting one sees in Season along the Coast, a marginal signal is near-fatal down there.

If WOSM spends the $$$ and upgrades, the next question becomes "Will they move it into Mobile?"

December 8th has come and gone. Radio-locator.com still shows the C1 CP, but with the 12/8/08 expiration date.

Anyone know if Mr. Cooper can/will renew this? Or is it gone for good?

It'd be a shame for a mom & pop station to loose out on the opportunity to own a 100kw station. If the station has indeed lost it's claim to the extra power, I'd love to know what kept them from building out this CP.

Seems that even if they couldn't afford to build the new facilities they could have traded the 100kw CP to Dowdy or Clear Channel for one of their coast stations and some cash. Biloxi stations appear to be the most valuable in the state of Mississippi. Am I missing something? It just doesn't make since to throw away such a great asset... even after the stress Katrina put on the area.

I was thinking the same thing. Construction costs were probably the deciding factor. But even unbuilt, that C1 CP is worth something. WOSM could have swapped with Dowdy for 102.3 (C2) or Clear Channel for 104.9 (C2) plus some cash.

Of course, given the current state of the economy, it's likely that both Dowdy and CC are tapped out also.
