WOSU-AM to leave Air Today

Today is the last day that 820 AM in Columbus will be on the air as WOSU-AM and owned by The Ohio State University. Someone reported that at 5 pm today, the station will sign off to begin the facilitation of the transfer to St. Gabriel radio. Anyone in a position to record that historic event in Columbus radio?

I will keep this up for the transition... Not sure how it will come through once they go to night power since its a walkman.

If it's 5 pm, they will still be on daytime. They don't lower power until Dallas sunset which is 6:15 local time in December.

They've started a continous loop advising listeners to tune into 89.7.

I wonder if the continuous loop is the equivalent of public radio stunting. Or as close as it gets.

The loop is still being aired...The whole announcing and news staff of WOSU Public Media are on the loop..and a few from NPR as well.

I thought it would have gone dark by now and stayed silent until the 17th when St. Gabriel gets the keys to fire it back up.

WVKO will also air a similar loop on 1580 asking listeners to switch to 820 on the 20th beginning at 6pm.

To Ohio Media Watch:
If you have a good portable radio with a cassette deck capable of picking up 820 I'd say "go for it bro."

I'm a bit far north of even 820's daytime range (Cleveland/Akron area).

I recorded a few minutes of the loop. How can I get an mp3 copy to you?

820 AM will be silent for at least three days.. The new WVSG AM820 plans to sign on the air as early as next Saturday if all goes well.

From WOSU-AM 820 PR dept:

"We will go silent Wednesday at 9am."

So, maybe a few days of Dxing on 820AM!

I wonder if WOSU is the longest single owner radio station in the nation as I write this? I know they are the oldest continuously broadcasting station in Columbus and among the oldest continuously broadcasting stations in the nation. Top 5 or 10 I believe.

I am wondering if we'll even have the chance to hear anything else daytime here. Looking forward to grabbing WBAP at night with no interference. I am thinking we won't hear IBOC when 820 resumes, but who knows?

IIRC, WHA has been owned by the University of Wisconsin since it was called 9XM in 1914 (It started audio broadcasts in 1917 and became WHA in 1922).

KDKA (1920) & WBZ (1921) have always been owned by Westinghouse (CBS Corporation is its direct successor).

That's an interesting question. As WEAO, it signed on in April 1922. That puts it after KDKA and WBZ, which have remained under consistent ownership since 1920 and 1921, respectively. (Yes, the name of the licensee has changed, but remember that in 1995 it was Westinghouse buying CBS and taking the CBS name, not the other way around.)

WBAA at Purdue goes back to early 1922 and has never changed owners, ditto for WGAZ/WSBT South Bend, which has been in the hands of the South Bend Tribune/Schurz family since early 1922. Then there's WHA Madison, which has been in the hands of the University of Wisconsin since 1921. WLB/KUOM Minneapolis (U of Minn.), WOI Ames (Iowa State College/University) and WHAA/WSUI Iowa City (U of Iowa) also go back to 1922.

It's safe to say that WOSU(AM) was one of the ten oldest stations in the country still in the hands of its original owner.
