WOSU's ratings bump was no flash in the pan

WOSU is up to 7.3 AQH 6+ in the June '21 Columbus PPM. Tied for #2 with WLVQ, and ahead of WTVN's 6.3 (which is down from last month's 6.8). Its trends indicate that NPR affiliate has apparently settled in as a top-tier player. Good for them.

WOSU sure has come along way with their NPR style format on 89.7... Making the move years ago to move the classical to 101.1 and focus 89.7 as a traditional NPR News/Talker has paid off for them!

The Pandemic has seen many NPR stations get a boost in their ratings. And while some have settled back to more normal numbers, others have stayed among their markets' top stations.

WNYC-FM is #9 in NYC
WBEZ is #8 in Chicago
WHYY-FM is #9 in Philadelphia

These stations were never in the top ten in the past. Often they were around #15.

Could it be more listeners are wanting less bombast and more thoughtful presentation? Sometimes they are a bit more left than I am, but I long ago tired of Limbaugh/Hannity et al.

Possible. However, WOSU's leap from mid to top tier didn't start until November 2020. If the change was mostly pandemic-driven it probably would have occurred sooner than that?

Seems like a possibility. And/or maybe there's some movement to TV, podcasts etc for similar content. And Limbaugh had such a strong following that replacements may not be able to duplicate that performance. I might be wrong, but I doubt much of WOSU's increases have resulted from migration over from WTVN.

Agree with NuRoo. NPR and WTVN attract different sides of the political spectrum.
I'll occasionally listen to WOSU and even WOUB out of Athens for uninterrupted DeWine addresses or something similar if WTVN or WLW isn't carrying them, but that's about it.

July PPMs are out, and WOSU is up yet again, from 7.3 to 7.8. #2 in the market for the first time, sandwiched between iHeart stations #1 WCOL and #3 WNCI. And it looks like WOSU's growth this month is from increased cume.

Meanwhile, sister classical WOSA earned what's easily its highest share since they moved to 101.1, at 2.3 (up from 1.5). But WOSA's increase seems to be from TSL.
