Would a dance station work in Atlanta?

I often wonder if a dance station work in Atlanta.

There are several good ones in NY, SFO, LAX and Phoenix; however, I wonder if our market could support one.

The closest thing we had to one was Power 99, a dance-learning CHR, before it switched format back '92.

It seems like there is a hole for one but don't know if it could sustain itself for longer than a couple of years.

Your thoughts?

If you wanna dance go to a club. What's wrong with V103, Viva, Star, The Beat, Q100, Hot 97 and that lot?

Wild 96.7 was a dance station before it went hip hop. Could a dance station work? I think it could with the proper programming and direction. It would defintely have to be like XM 81 BPM and Sirus Remix channel.

As much as I love Dance it will never happen in Atlanta. Having no Dance station here was the reason I bought my first XM satellite radio almost 4 years ago.

Would the format be successful in Atlanta? Probably not. If it was done like XM's BPM 81 or the old Energy in Chicago, the number's might be decent in the beginning but after the first book or two you'd see the numbers begin to fall.

Besides, would you really want Cox or CC to attempt Dance since they can't even program something simple like a successful oldies station here in Atl?

People said ATL would never get a Hispanic FM or Gospel FM, but guess what? It happened. So with the shifting demographics of Atlanta, and the city growing by leaps and bounds daiily, it is only a matter of TIME before ATL gets a DANCE station. In the meantime, the mixes on V, Hot, the Beat, & Q will have to suffice. If you can't dance to some of the music I hear on some ot the mixes in town, maybe you can't dance....lol! And there's always the internet! Find your favorite dance format in your favorite big city and listen online! It's 2007, and ONLINE listening is becoming very popular now.

I think Atlanta is still too much of a conservative city to support dance. Q100 strayed away from playing dance music. The best dance station was the old Wild 96.7! They played dance mixes of almost everything. They even played parody songs like the Bong Song. That was the best station I have EVER heard. Gosh I miss them

Cox tried an all-dance station in Miami (Party 93.1, which took over classical WTMI), but it was short-lived. It went Internet-only for a short time afterwards, but that also is history. Other companies have tried all-dance formats in other markets, most of which folded within two years of launch.

It seems to me this could be a perfect HD2 format. Otherwise, I don't think it will be an analog FM format anytime soon.

A current based dance station will not make it in Atlanta. The market is very fragmented and you have to play the hits! If there is a dance hit, then V-103, Q-100, and the Beat probably pick it up on their playlist.

Now, would someone maybe feature a retro-dance show? That might have some possibilities as a special once a week feature. Cox won't do it because they hate disco, but perhaps another fine Atlanta outlet might try it. I'm thinking that somewhere in the 80's did the old 94Q try it with a Friday Night or Saturday Night Fever show?? Hard to remember - too many format changes to go thru.

Considering how other dance stations have flipped formats, it would not be smart for any station to play dance in Atlanta. Energy in Chicago flipped to Spanish. KTU in New York is now mostly hip hop. It is possible to have a dance show on the weekends when people are going to the clubs but not 24 hours. There are dance formats on HD2 stations in other markets and there is some potential that it could come here on HD2.

The problem isn't that there's not enough of audience for dance music. The main problem is large record companies don't support dance music.

Cox doesn't hate disco. In the late 90's, B98.5 had a retro dance show on Saturday Night. That was discontinued when the "Totally 80's Weekends" rolled into town on B98.5 weekends.

It sounded like to me that B98.5 had some success last weekend with their "Summer Fun" party weekend (which had plenty of disco and other dance tunes in the mux. If they decide to go back to split format (AC weekdays and party music weekends), a retro dance show would fit in perfectly.

If Atlanta gets another oldies station, a retro dance show could be very beneficial to keeping the station around.
