Would a "Rhythmic AC" play these songs?

I was wondering the other day about whether or not these "Rhythmic AC'S" like Movin' and Snap would play 90's house/dance hits that were popular in their day. Some of them include:

Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman
Cathy Dennis - Touch Me (All Nite Long)
Beats International - Dub Be Good To Me
Black Box - Strike It Up
Black Box - Everybody Everybody
Londonbeat - I've Been Thinkin' About You
La Tour - Blue
C&C Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat
Lisa Stansfield - This Is the Right Time
THE KLF - 3am Eternal
Inner City - Big Fun
Deee-Lite - Groove Is In the Heart
Bizarre Inc. - I'm Gonna Get You
Everything but the Girl - Missing (Dance Remix by Todd Terry, not original heard on AC stations)
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You
Snap - Rhythm Is a Dancer
Snap - The Power

And so on, these are all obviously house/dance tracks, but were also huge hits on CHR from 1990-1994 that I feel would fit in great on Rhythmic AC.

I played most of them the past 3+ years...and then some.

Are you from Chicago or something? "Big Fun" by Inner City got very little support from CHR radio. Maybe from Z-95 Chicago and WHYT Detroit, as well as several Top 40/Dance stations (B-96 Chicago), and some Urbans (especially Kiss FM and WBLS New York). The song is from 1989
Everything But The Giril's "Missing" was a hit on CHR mainly thanks to the Todd Terry remix, but it took forever for most CHRs to notice it. Wasnt really until 1995 that it became a big CHR hit. Among the first to play it were Miami's Power 96 and Y-100.
Stardust's "Music Sound Better With You" wasnt a hit on CHR radio at all, and is from the late 90s. It was a big Dance/Pop hit across Europe though.
Latour's "Blue" wasnt a hit, but many of the major market CHRs played "People Are Still Having Sex"
Beats International "Dub Be Good To Me", which was produced by Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) was a number one hit in the UK, and was also huge on the Eurochart Hot 100. In the States? I don't remember it being a hit.
Lisan Stansfield had several songs that hit the charts in America, especially "All Around The World", but I don't remember "This Is The Right Time" making a big splash here.

Off the top of my head, I have played the following songs on my show at least once:

- Crystal Waters "100% Pure Love" & "Gypsy Woman"
- Cathy Dennis "Touch Me"
- Black Box "Strike It Up", "Everybody Everybody", & "I Don't Know Anybody Else"
- Londonbeat "I've Been Thinkin' About You"
- C+C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat", "Here We Go", "Things That Make You Go Hmmm", "Just A Touch Of Love", "Pride", "Do You Wanna Get Funky", "Robi Rob's Boriqua Anthem"
- Lisa Stansfield "All Around The World"
- KLF "3AM Eternal" & "Justified & Ancient"
- Inner City "Good Life" & I think I'm about to play a not-so-well-known vinyl single in a week...!
- Deee-Lite "Groove Is In The Heart"
- Bizarre Inc. "I'm Gonna Get You"
- Everything But The Girl "Missing (Todd Terry Remix)"
- Snap "Rhythm Is A Dancer", "Power", & "Mary Had A Little Boy"

BTW, I'm not from Chicago.

No I'm not from Chicago...I'm from Boston. I just remember at certain times hearing most of, if not all of these songs at a some point on several CHRs/Dance stations across the region during that time, including WFHN, WZOU (now WJMN), WKCI (played Stardust regularly on their Sat. night mix show), WPRO, WKTU (yes I know it's a dance station) and so on. I know WKTU does play these tracks nowadays which is why I asked in the first place. There was a HUGE market for dance/rhythmic tracks during this period, and I think would fit in great on these "rhythmic ACs" across the country.

I know Movin 99.7 will play some of those songs

I know Movin 99.7 will play some of those songs

1.Dub Be Good To Me by Beats International came out in the Spring / Summer of 1990 and was played on KMEL (Top 40/Dance).....I hav'nt heard that song played since it was current..Not even in the mix..(I do have the 12inch though)
2. Big Fun by Inner City (winter of 1989) was also played on KMEL, and like Beats International, has'nt been played since it was current..

So you can bet the farm that these titles won't be played in their entirity on any MOViN formatted station..Most of the Late 80's/90's dance records that you'll hear on MOViN either had at the very least , moderate peak chart position on the Hot 100, or was a Dance record that was a local favorite that former Jammin'/classic R&B stations or other local station mix shows have kept afloat in previous years..

I can answer this from a 'KTU perspective (and to the one poster, 'KTU is a rhythmic/AC...but it isn't "dance", not in comparison to a Pulse 87, C-89.5 in Seattle, Energy 92-7 in San Francisco)

Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman YES
Cathy Dennis - Touch Me (All Nite Long) YES
Beats International - Dub Be Good To Me NO...was never heard in NYC, don't ever remember it on Hot 103/97
Black Box - Strike It Up YES
Black Box - Everybody Everybody YES
Londonbeat - I've Been Thinkin' About You MAYBE
La Tour - Blue NO
C&C Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat YES
Lisa Stansfield - This Is the Right Time MAYBE on Pulse but not on 'KTU
THE KLF - 3am Eternal YES
Inner City - Big Fun NO....and I LOVE this track :(
Deee-Lite - Groove Is In the Heart YES
Bizarre Inc. - I'm Gonna Get You YES
Everything but the Girl - Missing (Dance Remix by Todd Terry, not original heard on AC stations) YES
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You YES
Snap - Rhythm Is a Dancer YES
Snap - The Power YES

When WMGi terre Haute was a Dance station they played Inner City's Good Life, but not Big Fun,,, I actually like Good life better. Im gonna add a few to the list here.

Also, anyone remember a group called Sound Factory- the song was everybody get on the Floor, and another song from them called Good time That was played on both WMGI Terre Haute, and even WDJX Louisville played it, but I never heard this song on any other stations, not even the dance stations. I bet some of you would reognize them from mixshows if you heard them.

Also,, Who did that song called Girls Night Out.... That would make a good movin song.

Also,, Seduction-Two to make it right.... Rhythmic ACs could play both these, they were big chr songs.

Also, Corina-Temptation,, Originally broke on power 96 Miami in Winter in 89, but finally became a top 10 national CHR hit in Summer of 91.

Jesus Jones-Right Here, Right now,,, Not really dance,,, but it fits the format, and you never hear it anymore.

Shanice-I Love your Smile,,,,Not Dance either, but still a lost gem you never hear anymore.

LIL Suzy-Take me in your arms, and Promise me......... Chr played theses as well, not every chr, but all the cool ones did.

Collage-I'll be loving you-Another big CHR hit from 1995

Captain Hollywood Project-More and More---Big CHR hit from 1993

Anyone remember Joe Public-Live and Learn--Actually not dance either,, but yet another lost rhythmic gem we cant hear anymore.

Bell Biv Devoe-Poison and Do me..... Not Dance,,, but you never hear these anymore.

Duice-Dazy Dukes-Perhaps as a late night and weekend record...

Rhythm Syndicate-P.a.s.s.i.o.n.-- Bet you all forgot that song, but I bet it rings a bell now.

Madonna-Rescue me, Erotica, Deeper and Deeper, and justify my love... But they always play 80s maddona, like a Prayer and stuff like that.

Depeche Mode-Enjoy the silence-Big CHR hit in 1990 on CHR, some Dance stations, and even some ALT Rock stations.

Thanks for the artist ID Cheff,,, I knew it was either 90 or 91 when it came out.

A few more that come to mind.

Dirty Cash-Adventures of Sevie B

Rapinition-Love me the right way-Our rhythmic Hot 96..(NOW URBAN) played it in heavy rotation, im not sure if it was really big on other rhythmics or any CHRs.

Los Del Rio-Macarina---Its total cheese,, but the target female artist would probably get down to it if played on rare occasions.

Angelina-Release me.... WMGI played it, but I think it was overall just a dance hit.

C and c Music Factory-Just a touch of love, and here we go, lets rock and roll.

Outhere brothers-Boom Boom Boom-- the clean version is fine for rythmic AC

Jomanda-Got a love for you... Still more of a dance hit, but some CHRs and even Urbans played it at the time. Open House Party played it alot.

Anything from CECE Peniston-Finally, Keep on walking,, ETC

Marrs-Pump up the Volume

UB40-Red Red Wine..

First Flight-Reggae Dancing

Pretty Poison-Catch me im falling

Anything from Color me Badd

Kris Kross-Jump

Geoge Micheal-too funky

Talor Dayne-Cant get enough of your love...1993 remake of Barry White classic

Tina Turner-I dont wanna Fight...

Scritti Politti-Perfect way.

Enigma-Sadness

Timmy T-One more try

Anything from Cathy Dennis...

Jody Whatley-Dont you want me

Jayne Child-Dont wanna fall in love

El Debarge-Who's Johnny-From the Short Circuit movie

Some Rhytmic ACs may already play one or two of these songs, but not much if any.

I hate how the rhythim ac, well mainly the movin stations, are like a hot ac, they should not play that much new music. They should play more old music

Well, I think they need a certain amount of Current music to keep the format from buring out, but I dont care for the Rhythmic ACs that try to be like a watered down Rhythmic, with mostly current Hip Hop in rotation,,, but then they play a 70s disco tune... I think they should focus on 80s and 90s Dance and all Rhythmic music in general, some R&B like Baby Face and Bobby Brown, some Old School Hip Hop, plus Dance,,, it should sound like what a Rhythmic in the 80s and 90s sounded.. I dont think that any of them should go back any farther than maybe 1982-84 on tracks, cause the lower end target audience doesnt remember or like Disco,, I think thats why the LA Movin is doing so bad,, not only is the market already over saturated with tons of Rhythmic stations, especially if you count 104.7 in Oxnard which since the upgrade can be picked up in many parts of L.A,, and especially KKGI from the I.E, which despite being 70 miles away will boom in like local on even most Boomboxes and walkmans,,, Although there are parts of LA where KKGI is just white noise due to moutain or terrain blockage, and I havent been to LA in years so I have no idea really on how well 104.7 comes in there, but I just go by Radio Locator, and what the locals tell me.

But otherwise Nate Dog,, since your market has too Rhythmic Urbans with good signals for currents, plus you have Energy 92.7 for current Dance,,, then yeah,, your Movin 99.7 should lean on 90s and 80s rhythmic music,, but definately needs to add some more Dance,, Althought your Movin 99.7 seems to actually be one of the more Dance friendly ones around.. And thats probably due to the past of KYLD and WMEL....

I hate those burned out currents that they play from months ago , like pink and natasha beddingfeld

wow, great lists of songs from back in the day! I'm in Houston and I do not hear alot of these on Dallas' Movin' at all (I listen online of course)

makes me want to scramble to my gold disc library and start adding some of these to my internet station i run! lol

What is the radio station that you run, I night be interested in takeing a listen.

There's one song that just came out not too long ago that would be PERFECT for Rhythmic A/C and actually WOULD NOT WORK for current dance/rhythmic stations...

Jamie Jo feat. Barry Gibb - U Turn Me On

Don't get me wrong, I actually like the track. The vocals are nice (well...when she sings, minus Barry Gibb's "ying yang"). But thinking about it from a New York City perspective, the song (and it's because of Barry Gibb in it) should get airplay on 'KTU. The song is VERY A/C for Pulse 87 and other current rhythmic stations. It just wouldn't sound right on an high energy, youth oriented dance station.

But for a 'KTU and stations that have "Movin" in them...this track works and should be considered, that is if it hasn't been already

Midwest,

Throughout this thread, you have pinpointed why RHY AC has not worked. They simply do not play the rhythmic hits of the 90's and some 80's that really made the 90's sound so good. You and I both remember MIX-FM when they dominated with dance. So many hits lost and I really thought the RHY AC format would resurrect these songs but they missed the boat and tried to cater to a hip-hop crowd. Money demos say, especially the ladies in their 30s and 40s right now really loved dance and dancy hip-hop and r&b from the 90s. Fun, upbeat music and most of it non-existent on today's RHY AC stations. Dial up airchecks of WMGI in 1995-96, B-96 early 90s, KZ-93 Peoria 1993, Variety 103.7 WDBR Springfield IL 1994 and you'll find the average midwest station driving home the rhythmic hits that would resonate so well with today's money target demo. The MOVIN network MOVED right past all the hits that Clubber has resurfaced in this thread. Please, someone who's doing this format, do it right!!! Plenty of songs to choose from and a potential fun, hip, format. Too bad cookie cutters killed this format and quickly. It's sad! Thanks for your musical input and expertise in this area MWC. Stations should listen to you.
