Would a station like Z103.5 Toronto work in America?

This is probably the most dance-friendly CHR I've heard, they have songs like "Ghosts n' Stuff", "Stereo Love", and "Dirty Talk (Laidback Luke mix)" on rotation, along with hit music. Would a station like Z103.5 work here? I'd say the station that sounds very much like Z103.5 is B96 Chicago, but without the dance hits...

In smaller aspects, you have this.

K-104 in Poughkeepsie, NY and Fun 107 in Fairhaven (New Bedford, AM) are CHR stations that play some dance. They may not be intensive as Z103.5 (Toronto has always remained dance friendly, and that can go back to the days of Energy 108, Power 88.5, etc.) but they do have some aspects. To a VERY small extent, 92.3 Now in NYC has leaned a notch to current dance (that Z-100 can't really go on since they have to protect 'KTU).

Things are leaning on the positive for dance where a station like a Z103.5 could become a reality for most cities here. It does have to take a "change" in the way core dance fans accept the music, in the sense that if an artist like Wynter Gordon, Laidback Luke, Afrojack, etc. would get some spins, then they would have to accept Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, Usher, Rihanna, etc. into the rotation. It's that "give and take" that will make things happen here. Perhaps THEN, if dance gets strong enough in that sense, you could see a few stations similar to what Brett does on Z88.9 pop up more extensively with our "brand" of dance.
 
And not to rain down on a parade here, because it is a cool song, but if it wasn't for the fact that Deadmau5 is Canadian (Toronto) the track may or may not have gotten any airplay. Deadmau5 satisfies CanCon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_content . That REALLY helped dance back in the 90's there since you did have plenty of Canadian based artists/acts producing dance music that fell under this quota that radio stations had to abide by.

I still like "Ghosts N' Stuff", no diss to the track. But that's why I could see that track get the play there and not hear it on the radio down here (outside of satellite radio)
 
Ahh, the age old question of this forum: The Z-103.5 model in the States. It's never seemed to make sense on a musical level that CHRs around the world incorporate Pure Dance as a good percentage of their playlists and the US CHRs haven't. This model could be a viable competitor to CHRs with a more upbeat vibe and could be a totally different format than US CHR itself, much like how Active Rock differs from Modern Rock. A station such as Nova 96.9 in Sydney is vastly different from US CHRs as it plays a good amount of Modern Rock & Pure Dance alongside the Pop, Hip-Hop, Dance Pop, Rock, etc.

There are no CHR/Pop stations in the US that sound anything like Z-103.5. The Dance friendly CHRs that people bring up here on occasion might play 1 or 2 Dance songs in rotation. On a station like CIDC Z-103.5 you'll hear plenty of current Dance as well as the occasional throwback from the past 10 years.
There are a couple of other CHRs in Canada, such as Hot 107 Edmonton, that are also pretty big on Dance.

Of course it could work,, but it would have to be in a market with no CHR for competition,, proplem is,, if a true CHR popped up they would steal most the audience unless the station got established for at least a year... If the market already has a CHR it would actually be safer to go pure DANCE. Ive been to Toronto, and its more like being in a European City than North America,,,,


However, throughout Canada,,,, a Z-103.5 stations could work in most Canadian Big Cities.. It might also work somewhere like Fairbanks or Honolulu outside the 48 continuity states, or WTF ever you call us..
