Would all traffic format work in LA?

Just curious: if an all-traffic format like this one http://www.am730traffic.com/ can exist (in Vancouver!,of all places: Not exactly the most car-centered city in the world. ) Why not in the Southland? Certainly there are enough different roadway systems that one could easily fill an entire 10 or 15 minute block with live traffic updates. Thoughts? My apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere.

too much physical area to do this realistically: the odds that you'll hear an update
mentioning your specific area are slim...if you're stopped on the 405 at Getty, you'll
probably be hearing about the IE or something in Orange County.
sounds like reverso-world, but there's too much traffic to cover.

but I could be wrong. again.

LA been there done that no success... wasn't it 1650 AM? ("K-Traffic")

And Car Radio 930, too.

With the growing availability of route specific traffic via direct to device services, the future of all traffic would seem limited.

Car radio 930? As in AM 930 in Los Angeles? When was this? Under the call sigh KRTH? How many more questions do I get?

In 1984, KHJ tried a Top 40 format called "Car Radio," highlighted with traffic reports every ten minutes, 24 hours per day.

If I remember correctly, all traffic was one of Saul Levine's 'format of the month' when 540 was out of Hesperia.

Who could ever forget KHJ's "car-tunes"? or "Smokin' Oldies"?...or "We all grew up to be cowboys"? Nurse Jeff and I suggest you check out XM Channel 222 for All LA Traffic, All The Time. And the fender-benders just keep on comin'!

Also what hurt K-Traffic 1650 (?) was that people would tune in, get their info
(assuming they would wait around for them to talk about their particular area of
interest) then tune back out; they didn't stick around along enough to hear ads.

Sort of like all-news, but on meth....(in terms of people tuning in and out for a short time)

It's being done 24/7 for Los Angeles on XM Channel 222. Boring as hell. It's also not up to date. I've passed by accidents they are currently airing more than once and they don't exist.

and occasionally, the "anchor" will save their files to the wrong location: I've heard Atlanta
and Tampa/St. Pete reports mixed in with the LA reports.
and XM needs to provide a pronouncer for these guys...Sepulveda is NOT "sep-uhl-VEE-duh"...or worse.

Reports on Sirius have been pretty good.

Car Radio 93/KHJ ... just ahead of its time. Yeah that's it. Of course compared with many stations today, it actually sounded decent, sadly.

I made that mistake when I was down there. I spoke the street name waiting at a light. My buddy from Manhattan Beach just rolled his eyes and said, "it's Se-PUL-ve-da."

Fry's Electronics used to have a commercial on KEZY or Mix that pronounced Sepulveda wrong. Always thought it was funny.

Quirky as all get out is our recollection...but the AM Stereo was bitchin'! More separation than what you see in a Jessica Simpson video. All 15 of us in the LA basin who had AM Stereo receivers were beyond geeked out!!

Hmmm.....a new (old) format for a station to try? KFWB or KNX? Are you listening Roy??!!?

Dr. Akbar! Nice to see you posting on the LA board. How's Buckeye and the Media Hut this time of year? Nurse Jeff keeping busy?

We occasionally motor over to Port Hueneme, looking for our old friend Zumaphobe, and check out the sorry state of radio in el Lay. What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports are TMISU thinking about with The Sound? Talk about a niche in search of a niche! Buckeye is even more special in September as you can sit on a bus bench for at least 15 seconds before getting a 3rd degree burn. And Valley radio stations are in a fierce battle to determine who can voice track the most dayparts and fill DES offices with more ex-employees. Nurse Jeff and I wish we'd had taken KB Home's offer for the Media Hut land more seriously back in the day. Now it's not even worth the trade in value of our '76 Gremlin Levis Special. YIKES!

How about tweaking the all-traffic thought... and gear format specifically towards the folks behind the wheel... Maybe break up the traffic reports with all things motor vehicle... or for sales-type folks who spend hours a week on the road.

- Car maintenance tips/How to get better mileage
- Car reviews
- Vehicle Insurance Information
- What to do after an accident
- Hot new gizmos for cars
- Self-help stuff... 7 habits, etc.
- Career Guidance stuff

Just some top of mind ideas....

That's actuallly a good idea! I try and get my reports from sirius but I hate the mispronunciations and they're never quite up to date (could it be the are read from, what..New York or something?) I've been away from La La Land a couple years, but growing up there was an am news station that did reports every 6 minutes..isn't that still around??

Just some top of mind ideas....

Wasn't Car Radio playing AC music during that phase? I'm almost positive that there is an aircheck online somewhere....
