Would an all New Wave format succeed?

This hypothetical dance station would play the likes of...

Culture Club
Duran Duran
Depeche Mode
New Order
Romeo Void
Haircut One Hundred
Ultravox
The Fixx
The Cure
Bronski Beat
ABC
Flock of Seagulls

I know you hear these groups on a few different formats but would a station playing only 80's New Wave have any chance of gaining a decent audience as well as advertisers?

It worked in the 80s with stations like 106.7 K-Rock Los Angeles, Live 105 San Francisco, and 92.7 LIR (then DRE) Long Island.
An 80s New Wave format is wayyy too niched of a format to work on FM, but as an internet-only station it could (if there arent already a couple such stations).

In an equal blend with 70s 'PUNK',YES!

>If you took that list, and then added in the 'edge' bands of the first punk wave, you know, the bands that are now "Hot Topic" T Shirt material, like Lou Reed & the Velvet Underground,Iggy Pop & The Stooges,The New York Dolls, wayne County & The Electric Chairs,Ramones,Cherry Vanilla, etc, which would make it very'Edge" and very now! with the new breed of brats!

I do know of one Net Only station with this format, its actually a tribute station to the former XB-102 in either Vietnam, or Phillipines, Cant remember which. Anyway, the old XB-102 was a New Wave leaned station, on the air from 1984, to 1987 that played alot of 12 inch remixes, here is the link to the tribute station www.wxbforever.com

Sirius' First Wave channel plays all of these in high rotation. They don't play much in the way of 70s Punk, focusing instead on music from the 1980s.

It makes a great niche channel on XM 44 and on an Internet station, but like all oldies programming, it's better suited as a weekly specialty program.

I have to agree. The format can only last for a couple of months before it gets tired (like any format geared to a specific time frame; you can only play so much since the music is limited). Think back to the "Jammin' Oldies" format and any "decade" format.

I believe there are a couple of stations streaming on the Internet now that does this format. I don't think it is a bad idea...just something that might not necessarily work out for terrestrial radio now. Though 20 years ago, this was working!
