Would DANCE FM work in Philly?

I used to listen to My 106.1 once in a while and enjoyed the Solid Gold Dance tunes I would hear sometimes. Problem is they would play a great Gold Tune and then mix in a rap song that in my opinion belonged on a full rap station, like WJKS-FM

Would a station that's upbeat and positive playing the best Dance Tunes of All Time work in Philly?

A songlist featuring: Shame, Best Part of Breaking UP, Groove Line, Always and Forever, Boogie Oogie Oogie, Reunited, Listen to your heart..... Along with the Funky sounds of You Dropped a Bomb on Me, Chase Me and more.

That station you're thinking of would sound like the former Mix 102.7 in NYC, when Frankie Blue was PD. I loved the sound of that station. It also is similar to Club BEN, 95.7 HD2 (don't know if that station's still Club BEN now or simulcasting Now 97.5's Christmas format)

The idea of a dance station in Philly has been rehashed multiple times on this board, with negative results. There's a 9 page thread with most of the people bashing dance music. I have come to expect to see negatoids post that "filly needs a danz stayshun".

95.7 HD-2 is NOT simulcasting Now 97.5's Christmas format.. it is playing its own Christmas music.. and has been for weeks now.. Now 97.5 Christmas music was only on 95.7 HD-2 for a few days..

Considering nearly a 1/3rd of CHR music these days is more or less dance music, you have to think that a dance formatted station would actually do better these days than if it were tried years ago.

As long as it's not "pure" dance or too euro sounding, and kept about half CHR/remix type material I think you would have a winner. Top 5 18-34, very solid cume.

But at this point I would settle for a KTU.

No. Dance music has a poor track record in Philly, and demographically would not be successful.

That is not true. Q102 in the 90's was considered dance station or a hybrid by many in the industry. Demographically it could work. The Northeast part of the country has a solid following for dance music.

The Solid gold approach wont work though. If you are going to do it, the golds have to be from the 90's and I would go current.

Top 40 radio sounds more like a dance station every day.

Does anyone remember back when WZZD 990 was dance? For an AM music station, it did fairly well.

If there is one station that can tweak toward that direction, it would be Wired 96.5. Wired is currently with it's "hits & Hip Hop" branding, but once in a while when tuning in, I noticed a few CHR remixes and a couple of dance currents thrown in, sounding similar to 92.3 Now in NYC.

Here's what WCAU FM 98.1 disco with Ramona sounded like several decades ago

I asked several people recently what they thought of Funk.....they never heard of the term....but know the Gap Band. If a radio station would be consistent you might get a following for vintage dance. Some markets have a drive time Traffic Jam or lunch hour with Old School. Most of the 80s music people can accept, including rock like Bruce Springsteen which has a steady beat. Mix that type music in with dance music.

If stations stops playing less familar tunes then people become less familar with them and they silently fade away. It reminds me of WFIL AM bringing back oldies and asking the general population if they are familiar with a song or like the song. People who did not like oldies were included in the survey so only the most over played songs that the general population were familiar with would get airplay. Then the music format dies because it is so predictable.

Wired's format has been "CHR without rock music" for most of its time on the air. That's the "hits" part of "hits & hip hop."
