SO there is all this bullshit & banter back and forth in Philly about the number one rock station flipping to hot talk after the new year when Stern jets off for Cirius satellite. If I can seriously pose the question. Does anyone think this hot talk format could work out in Central Pa or does Central PA appear as a music driven market for a reason?

It would be nice.. But we already seem to have a full roster of talk on the air now. Since Central PA is as open minded as Dustin Hoffman in Rainman when it comes to trying new things, I think you'd have an uphill battle.. Hot talk on FM would look great on paper. And I'd love to see it happen. But doubt that it'll jostle the ears that are already glued to a similar outlet.

This was tried in Harrisburg about 10 years ago. WCMB AM 1460 had an all "hot-talk" line-up: Imus, Liddy, Don & Mike, Tom Leykis. Imus and D&M were simulcast on their FM station (99.3?). The FM simulcast didn't last long.

IMO, this doesn't have anything to do with Central PA not willing to accept non-conservative talk. "Hot-talk" isn't the same as liberal talk. I think Central PA isn't crazy about "boobies and boogers" humor for hours at a time, and that's what "hot-talk" generally boils down to. (I make this comment as a long-time fan of Don & Mike.) I think it has to do with Central PA FM listeners not wanting to listen to talk. They want music.

GOOD liberal talk-shows will pull an audience in this area. Mark Wainright had a great local, left-of-center show on WHP for a number of years. I was told by a WHP exec that they would kill to have him back, but he wanted out of the business. I would listen to Alan Colmes, as I did when he was carried a number of years ago by WNZT. He's a good broadcaster and a very liberal guy. Air America simply isn't good radio. It's shrill and lightweight. Ed Shultz is horrible.

BTW, it's Sirius, not Cirius--just in case you wanna buy stock.

Spelling aside, sure Hot Talk would work here--about as well as it works anywhere. Good for a 5 share. Trouble is, music programming is SO much easier, SO much less expensive, and SO much easier to sell. No messing with agency edicts against controversial programming. No cancellations from direct clients over "something they said." No high-priced talent (the kind who can read AND write)...

Biggest problem in going with network talent is that the best stuff is all in morning drive. Gotta pick one. A few decent acts (Don & Mike) in PMD... but what do you do with the other 16 hours a day? Trading Post?

Re: what about Bruce??

Just curious, when Bruce Bond did his late afternoon show, it seemed quite popular for many years. Did he get the ratings when he was in his prime?

If so, seems to me that hot talk on FM works - maybe because everything else is national and not local?

It works when there's actual TALENT. That's why Bruce topped the ratings and the show lasted so long.<P ID="signature">______________

Are you saying there's no TALENT left in Central PA to make it happen once again - or is it really about $$ and our conservative (unwilling to accept change) marketplace? Just curious.
