Would this be "news/talk"?

Would the guardians of official radio format names consider a talk format the concentrated on news of celebrities, pop culture, and other such "news" as being a news/talk format? Considering that the modern newspaper devotes more space to such "news" than they do to political events, wouldn't a talk format devoted to that which fills the pages of the National Enquirer and People Magazine be a "news/talk" format?

It might be more accurate (and more attractive) to call it PopTalk. CelebTalk. TrashTalk.

Few stations promote themselves as "news/talk." This is a format description used by Arbitron and by ad agencies. The current designation is "News/Talk/Information" - differentiated from "All Sports," "All News" and "Talk/Personality." News/Talk/Information tends to focus on topics radio covers as news - and which newspapers include in the hard news sections (as opposed to "feature," "style" or "magazine" sections). NTI may also include sports talk and/or play by play sports and advice talk (often brokered) on weekends.

Personality/Talk gets more into celebrities, pop culture and trash.

All Sports is really sports talk and many of the larger and more successful sports station carry little or no play by play.

Isn't that similar to what CBS did a few years ago in New York with "Blink"? Ratings were worse than WNEW's post-O&A format of 'Talk Radio without the talk shows'.

To hear this gossip-talk format, just listen to any mediocre Hot AC morning show. Seems like nothing but gossip and discussions of reality shows. My litmus test: Whenever the hosts (usually a hyperactive male and slightly pottymouthed female) start into a long, monotonous discussion of some obscure reality show or mention either Tom Cruise or Jessica Simpson, I change the station ASAP.

Just my opinion here, but no thank you to this kind of format. Ick!

I don't know. I stay as far away from New York City as I can.
