Would you buy this station and why...

If you could, would you buy WGST and what would you do with it? (Please don't say things like "blow it up", "cut down the tower" and "turn it off forever". This is a serious inquiry)

Trusty:

Great idea! So, what you're saying is not to be WSB or even "WSB Lite", and certainly not a glorified network news feed. What you're talking about is an opinion/commentary-driven news station, versus Scott Slade reading the news. Basically, a talk show that goes along with the news as opposed to sticking to a set of show notes. Allow a limited number of callers to mix things up, but not so many they bog the show down. This format will be for shorter attention spans--more news bites and witty comments as opposed to long, 10 minute monologues and discussions.

Some would call it "unprofessional" because of the mixing of comedy and editorial with the news. Some would call it a moneymaker. It better be a moneymaker, because it won't be cheap (but it won't be outrageously pricey, either). If you got a 2-3 share outside of Rush/Braves you'd be OK.

I like the idea about putting R&S and TRG bits in with the news (as long as they're G-rated; we're going after a different demo here). Be careful that it doesn't become an FM "zoo crew/morning mess/wake-up crew" type show-that's not the idea.

You could even throw some "local interest" bits here; think "full-service radio" updated for the '00s. Imagine Kimmer doing a little-league report and going off on a 2-minute tangent.

Start in the summer, when days are long and sunup/sundown times are favorable for a non-clear-channel station. Then when people get hooked, they'll make more of an effort to tune you in before dawn or after dark when the days get shorter. Like the idea of playing to the urban audience at night for that reason as well.

Not sure if I like the idea of SSS and Ralph from Ben Hill on the same show for obvious reasons, unless you positioned it as a "no holds barred cage match" and played up to that (now that would be fun!), with no hard feelings allowed after the show.

Like bringing the Kimmer back--not sure what FM he would work on, though. Kimmer would need more support and more air time, not breaks every 10 seconds for traffic and weather. Slow the pace down a bit to make the show "stickier". We're talking a faster pace than a talk show, but a slower pace than typical AM/PM drive where people tune in to get a traffic report and change the station.

Besides R&S, there's plenty of un/underemployed talent out there. Put Rhubarb on for late mornings or maybe weekend AMs. Put Chris Krok on somewhere-maybe early evenings after the Kimmer.
