I would say that all of these would fall under the Dance category. Although, I would say that some of these fall under some sub-categories of Dance such as Dance Pop, Euro-NRG, Freestyle, etc.
______________

Real dance music many years ago.... CHR dance music in 2006.

Yes I do and we play all of them on our Adult Dance Channel Prima 202. Those were the good 'ol days of many dance songs crossing over.

Every single one of them is a dance record.

Maybe the person was having a bad day, he thought that some of these were "Urban", which makes zero sense to me.

Certain people may argue that the EMF-unbeleivable track is Rock,,, But I say its definatly Dance, especially the 12 inch Extended Version. Every single song on your list has Been on the Dance Chart, but also the POP Chart, but thats because Dance was more Mainstream in the 80s and early 90s, But Indeed, every song on your list is most definatly Dance.....

All of them dance, 100% especially for their time just like Cascada is 100% for this time. They may sound more pop-ish today than dance music sounds today but you must put these songs in their original radio context and with that 100% pure dance! Great songs. Someone needs to jump on this kind of format - does WNEW play all these?

KTU format was very similar when they resigned on back in 1996

This is how KTU used to sound like back in 1996...

I'm in agreement with everyone else who's replied so far on this thread... all of them easily fall into the dance category. A lot of these artists were (or still are) core dance artists!

I suppose an argument could be made for the fact that EMF's "Unbelievable" and the two Ace of Base songs are very downtempo, and don't fall into the typical dance BPM range that most people are used to. At the very least, those qualify as pop/dance crossovers. At the time, dance-friendly rhythmics were all over those tunes and the mixshows gave them a lot of love as well. I don't see a problem with calling those dance at all.

One of my friends actually lumps those "he raps, she sings" songs under the category of urban and/or rap. It's just so hilarious. We argued back and forth about it for hours one day and it ended with us just having our own thoughts/opinions on the genre assignments.
______________

I followed you over here to state once again that every single last song that you identified above (and on the other board) is indeed a dance song as far as I'm concerned. The mid-to-late-1990s were awesome as far as Eurodance on the U.S. CHR-POP scene. Are we possibly (hopefully) entering the second-coming of this wonderful era ?

Yes they are all dance songs. At the peak you would hear these songs on rhythmic and CHR stations. Now, some of these songs have resigned over to the "Lite" side. Go figure! LOL

CHRles - You forgot about the most successful dance record in CHR-POP history. It's a worldwide smash that spent nearly 14 months on the pop chart including over 3 months at # 1. I'm referring of course ... to the "Macarena". Oh sure we laugh about it now, but I bet that most of us were dancing like maniacs to it a decade ago ! I call it as I see it - the greatest dance song ever made. The world hasn't been the same since.

But I digress. Seriously though check out this article regarding the upcoming Winter Music Conference / Ultra Music Festival this weekend where I live aqui en el Sur de Florida:

http://www.nbc6.net/entertainment/8190659/detail.html

Along the same general lines of this thread who here considers The Killers' two recent hits - "Somebody Told Me" and "Mr. Brightside" - as dance records ? These are two records that started out on Modern Rock Radio a couple of years ago, crossed-over to Active Rock, and then over to CHR-POP and even CHR-Rhythmic, and then finally dance radio picked up on them rather late in the game.

Great list. I say its definitely Dance, plus I noticed WDVW, WCDV and KBIG playing those aforementioned tracks in their recurrent rotations.

Don't worry, I had a long discussion with an underground DJ who was saying that the music played by Energy SF/ Energy AZ is NOT dance music. Go figure. I said what is it then? He didn't have an answer.

Yes, everyone of them are derivates of a mainstream DANCE format. Good luck getting a PD to understand that. In fact, a format that focused on dance HITS from about 89 to today would clean clocks in Chicago - that's for sure. I can live without the Ace Of Base but it still tests well with fems.

The word in bold underlined answers the question.

Sometimes the more "underground" someone identifies themselves, the more they want to distance themselves from the mainstream (dance term in this case)
______________

You could even model it 85 to today, and wipe clean 18-34 and 25-54, effectively changing the landscape of the Chicago dial. For sure make LIT and LOVE re-evaluate. Power take notice and GCI peek. Also, create one more thorn for B96.

Such a rich history of Chicago dance of varying degrees. WBMX, WGCI, WCRX, B96, Energy, Cyber Radio. So it is not an off the wall concept. It has already been done, and people have it in their past, so it stirs memories. (Memories drive emotions at older ages. Hence older demos not embracing newer music.)

Would bascially be WKTU minus the disco except for a few spikes and tailor the overall sound for Chicago.
