Okay, I give up. Is it Bob in Texarkana, Jack in Jackson Miss or Drew in Dry Gulch?

Probably not. I'm just not a fan of the "all over the place" format known as "Jack", "Bob", etc. I guess I'm just old-fashioned. If I'm in the mood for Rock, I'll listen to it and if I'm in the mood for R&B, AC, Oldies, etc. I love all kinds of music, but I'm not much in the way of hearing it all blended together.
______________

None of the above, and that's not my question. Would you listen to a station that played that over the span of an hour?
______________

I would listen to this station in the same way that I listen to Dallas's Jack and Austin's BOB.

I like most of what's contained within this hour of music, but I gaurantee you a few songs out of this segment and I would be flipping channels.

Jack stations for me are not a "leave it on all the time" kind of station. Eventually as with all stations, they play a song I hate or something that makes me cringe.

You could probably find a set of music on whatever station this is, where 1 song appeals to me and the rest is dreck.

That's how these stations work--hit or miss.

Sometimes you like everything they've played the last hour and sometimes you hate everything they've played the last hour.

I heard the question, and the answer is yes, probably. But where did you get the playlist?

I do like the "all over the place" format and would probably listen to the station. In the car though, I'd flip channels pretty quickly at some of those songs. I've listened to BOB in Austin in the car when I'm in listening range. I flip it off at times, but do find myself actually trying to catch the little "sweepers". I think they are funny and aren't as smart-assy as the one's I've heard on JACK in Dallas. I've even sat through some commercial breaks on BOB to catch the end of the stopset to hear what the little voice says. I know that sounds a little crazy...

At work, I'd probably be willing to keep it on that station (I have a rotary/dial tuner clock radio, so it's not feasible for me to change stations every time a 'bad' song comes on). If a song I don't like comes on, I could turn it off quickly, then back on. A lot of times I listen to JACK ONline from Dallas and will mute the computer on a bad song...when I see a 'good' song come up (on the window), I'll un-mute it. I'll listen to the commercials too...

But I would generally leave the station on at work. Again, if the "sweepers" are clever and stay fresh...I'd be willing to sit through some 'bad' songs and commercials just to catch them.

Also, if those same songs listed came up every day, then I'd find a new station (or better yet--my own MP3s and CDs) really quickly!! JACK (Online version) in Dallas seems to get a bit repetitive. BOB seems a little less repetitive IMHO.

Slateradio hit the nail on the head with the above as that's how I usually feel about the variety hits format in general.

The music listed is better than some of the wannabe's out there..But station IMO has no flow going..Jumping too much around... A good variety hits in my opinion is a few songs that are set up, even if in different formats but have some sort of flow going without the constant interludes between every song in some cases you have listed there... (as It gives the listener time to hit the seek button IMO)

Like how about the Sugar ray and the outkast back to back? Say Sugar ray,Then outkast, start going on a tangent with say Linkin park's "somewhere I belong" for example (unfortuneately I'm going by memory for the beginning and ends of the two songs you named and I beleive they progress off slightly from one another (the end of Sugar Ray to beginnning of Outkast and the same of the Outkast to Linkin Park)?

But that's my opinion..

KJAQ Seattle (yes, another Jack)

There's a LPFM station here that's taking a similar approach except they will throw in Patsy Cline and Montgomery Gentry next to Steely Dan. I'll try to run a monitor on them tomorrow night and we'll see what the carnage is.

It used to be that stations would spend hours on the music flow. Now it seems like they're spending hours on making the music not flow. I'm bored with Variety Hits. Yeah, they play the Beatles and they play Outkast. But the only Beatles songs they play are Can't Buy Me Love and Lady Madonna and the only Outkast they play is Hey Ya and maybe The Way You Move.

It's the same damn songs every day, just in a different order.

There's two other stations in Seattle that are trying to sound like Jack - one pulled off all of its jocks and is heavy on the 70's, the other is 'the best of the 70's, 80's, and 90's... and whatever'. So if you want to hear Jackson Browne do The Loadout one more time you've got at least three stations that will give it to you, daily.

If this is supposed to solve all of radio's problems, I just don't see it. The more stations try to sound different the more they all sound the same to me.

So, if I can be selfish, here's what I want on my radio: I want to hear music that doesn't bore me presented by people who entertain me. I don't want to hear a recap of what was on TV last night when I wake up. I want someone to say something that makes me look at someone or something that's familiar to me in a new light. I don't want to be told that you relate to me, I want you to actually relate to me. I want the outrageousness of Opie and Anthony or Stern 10 years ago (because he sucks now) with the brevity of Paul Christy.

Make me laugh. Make me cry. Make me think. Be real. Make me think you have an opinion about something. Challenge me.

I will only sit through four commercial units at a time. If you think that if you play four thirty second spots I will equate that as better than four 60 second spots, sorry. After 4 spots, you'd better be getting back to music if I ruled the world.

And finally, if I wanted to listen to an iPod, I'd plug an iPod into my car.

That's the funny thing about Jack. I like the music for the most part. It's the presentation that leaves me cold.

Re: The biggest reason I hate "Jack"

Not that there is such a thing as "Personality Radio" anymore, but the fact that MOST of these stations are jockless, or just have an "announcer" or two, is another reason that Jack, doesn't mean "Jack" to me.

It's another way they can skirt around paying talent.
______________

I like the variety hits format, especially when it's "all over the place," but my main point was that you can't have a station like that and play all good songs.
Somewhere between the Pat Benetar, Kiss, Madonna, Righteous Brothers and Coldplay, there will be at least 2 songs within an hour that somebody will think is utter crap.

KISS in SA is one of those station where I generally don't fidget with the dial buttons until they start with the commercials. I like about 90 percent of what they play.

I like a shocking variety of music, but I don't like every single song that's ever been released as a single.

There's enough bad classic hits out there that BOB could play an entire sets worth.
Some people like Huey Lewis and the News (Why????!!!)--I don't. When they come on Jack or Bob--I start dancing the dial.
