Would you listen to this?

After reading enough recent posts on this board, it is safe to say enough people think a Rhythmic or Dance station could work if it is programmed correctly. If I had the capability, here's an idea. First off, I would flip 93.1 to a Rhythmic station. Doug's last song would be Hold on to the Nights by Richard Marx. For about 3 minutes, the station would simulcast 760 am. Then, the first song of Detroit's Dance Station would start to play. Right Here,Right Now by Fatboy Slim. From here, in the first 15-20 songs, the tempo of this currently mythical station would be established. Other songs that would be played in the first few minutes: Start the Commotion by the Wiseguys. Hello-Martin solveig/Dragonette.-Bangarang-Skrillex. Temperature-Sean Paul. Make it loud-Michael Africk. Days go by-Dirty Vegas. Buffalo Stance-Neneh Cherry.- Sandstorm-Darude. Can't get you out of my head-Kylie Minogue. I want to know(pure energy) Information Society). Galvanize-Chemical Brothers. Stereo Love-Edward Maya. I'll be loving you-Collage. Evacuate the dance floor-Cascada. Sos-Rihanna. Starry-eyed surprise-Paul Oakenfold. Brand new lover- Dead or Alive, and, Strobe-Deadmau5. So, what do you think? would you change anything? do you think I wasted a few minutes over the weekend? or is this about right, or slightly better? Thanks for reading and replying. Be well.

I'll agree that a Rhythmic format could work in Detroit, given the Beat's success (considering a very crammed market) as long as it's not owned by Radio One, Clear Channel, or CBS. Here's where I disagree: You have listed wayyyyy too many EDM tracks. I'd say keep maybe 3 EDM tracks an hour- one of them being a non- (CHR)radio "cut", as I think that's what DRQ did. Fill the rest of the space with typical Rhythmic CHR and Urban tracks. I'd listen to your original idea if I was on the way to a party/club, but not sure if it would have enough listeners across dayparts to be a viable format. Your idea sounds like a pretty nifty college show or an hour or two segment on one of the commerical stations, though.

I would absolutely LOVE a station like this. It sounds primarily Rhythmic AC with a splash of more recent stuff thrown in. If you were to categorize such a station in a particular format, would you call it "Rhythmic AC", pure "Dance", or something else?

I tend to disagree with this. It is true that he's got a lot of EDM tracks in this list, but I love dance/trance music and would love to see such a format on mainstream radio. The only problem is that, in real life, it would never sell.

That was my point. The EDM would make for fun, and nostalgic, Friday/Saturday night drives, however I'm not too certain that a playlist with that much EDM could realistically make any money :-\

YES YES YES YES YES PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Cumulus would never flip it to dance. I Would love though to see a dance station in Detroit. I was thinking of seeing an "Energy" format. Like Energy 92.7 in SF or ChicagoZ both AMAZING stations when they were on air. I personally wouldn't mind seeing Crawford selling 103.5 WMUZ and see it become Energy 103.5...one can only dream though.

Good constructive criticism: Never hurt anyone. First off, chrocket, you make a good point. Most of the music I listed couldn't work at 10am or pretty much before 5pm. The point I wanted to make was it would be nice to see a station try something out of the box. Also, I went with 93.1 because they have done it before, and could do it again(or not), and I could tie in 760 am with the hypothetical format flip. Personally, it would have to be them because 98.7's in bed with the CHR format to keep 95.5 in the middle of the pack. For a station like this to be done right, Clear Channel can't be involved. 103.5 could be a spot, but not likely. and 105.1 seems ok to do AC. But, even if they tried it, Greater Media has mostly Rock stations. Not sure if they would try that. I will definitely research this a little more.

Crawford'll probably never sell 103.5... so don't hold your breath :)

While I do agree a Rhythmic could work in Detroit, it'd actually hurt WDVD in the long run if Cumulus tried it... they should try either WJR-FM or a country station to knock WYCD down a couple pegs :) Greater Media probably wouldn't do very well with any type of Urban or Rhythmic format, as they have mostly experience in Rock and AC formats...

Good point. 96.3-while their ratings have come down from 4.9-still dows better in the ratings than 95.5 and 98.7, so that could keep them from doing it. In a previous post, I wondered if maybe down the line, Would WJR go to FM?, but that idea seems unlikely for now, so maybe a new country station might be in the cards. 103.5 may not sell their station in the immediate future, but keep in mind 107.5 right now. Who ever thought they would sell 107.5? But, in the end, that's likely not an option.

We did have a second country station recently (106.7 The Fox) and it failed miserably, so maybe a second country station might not work.

Jason, you make a very good point, and I think 99.5 has become very well known and established for any newcomer to knock them off their peg, let alone make them nervous. That was the idea behind the post. Instead of conceding another Oldies, or Country station, how about trying something really out of the box and fresh. But, in light of 106.7's failure not too long ago, if 93.1 flips, they are likely to go Country or Talk before they go Rhythmic or Dance.
