Would Curtis flank their Country with more Country? Brilliant programming minds are plotting and scheming into the wee hours of the night. Stay tuned.
Could Capitol take a Class A and make it an FM News Talk? Or will they succeed in moving the little Creedmoor stick to cover Cary with Smoooooth Jazz? Film at Eleven. Armchair pontificators step onto your virtual radio soapboxes and give us your wisdom and/or your inane ramblings, sometimes it's difficult to tell which is which.

Maybe 96 will do a "sign off" stunt to right themselves? Nah...we know that stunt doesn't work.

Here's what this birdie hears...

Allegedly a great big media playa, now only in Top 20 markets (not Infinity, Entercom or Cumulus) has made the offer of a lifetime that Mr. Curtis can't refuse. True...or false? We'll see. Rumors swirl every year of a CMG sale...could 20-05 be the year it actually happens? Though it's heard that if the deal happens one station will not be part of package. IF, I say IF, the sale happens and it's the group in question, one thing they do well...arguably better than most, is rock radio.

A wise man would take 99.9 country against WQDR, especially when Joe Wade is one of the top country programmers in the format. Raleigh can support more than one country station. Smooth Jazz? It's been tried in the market, years ago. Didn't fly. FM Talk? That has promise. Talk is the last frontier for "personality radio". WRAL has a newsroom full of talent, so the news side of it is covered. No cost there. Plenty of talk talent out there. TRN now reps Mancow who has re-tooled his show and is doing quite well. Arguably heir apparent to Stern, but sellable. Big plus. Could do active rock on the weekends. WTKS/Orlando. WKRK/Detroit and WCKG/Chicago do it. Works well.

Next pontificator?

Might that be Emmis or Susquehanna?

Re: 96 Rock Taking Nose Dive?

Fact: Curtis is NOT going to sell. He has already set up his son in
law to take over when he retires. Another note..."96 ROCK Taking A Nose
Dive"? The last time I looked (Phase 2 Trends)..96 ROCK was up!

Strictly based on P12 plus, WBBB AND WRDU both up as is G105. River sampling tailoring off. With that said River up trends as well.

Even though it is only a trend, good to see 'RDU rebounding.

Good to see Capt. Jack is back. He only seems to come out when the Clear Channel stations have up-ticks. Funny how that works, huh Cap? As for Joe Wade being one of the top country programmers. That is laughable. His station in the Motor City was flipped right out from under him and he was both PD and morning guy. Knowing the team at Curtis I don't think anyone is losing sleep over the possibility they may compete with Joe. After all can there be a worse imaged more lifeless station anywhere than WRAL? Really?

Sunny 93.9

I rather like WRAL's imaging... especially the jingles.
______________

Good point about Sunny, but WRAL is still pretty awful. Zero creativity. They should hire someone like Chuck Matthews to wake the place up.

Tsk Tsk Alumni I am always here enjoying all of your entertaining ramblings and wisdom, hopefully a book out soon, afterall why limit yourself to this local message board when the world is at your fingertips? Joe is a good guy why would someone like yourself want to disrespect him? Pretty pathetic.

Hola gents! I appreciate the props on my imaging...unless of course you were joking...

I've produced HAC and AC imaging; WMVX/Cleveland, WGPM/Greenville NC, and now WWWM/Toledo (soft AC). It's not rocket science. Lots of voice shadowing depending on how "hot" you want the station. Keep it moving with roll over sweepers and write topical IDs and promos that speak to your core. EZ, right? lol!

I believe most of WRAL's imaging is produced out of house, except for some local promos. Don't they use John Pleisse? I'm not really a fan. Just my 2 cents. I'd be more to try a new approach instead of the usual HAC style of imaging. I'd like to try a more personable vo like Nick Michaels. He's not cheap, but has a distinct voice, delivery and helps with creative.

I thought Sunny was getting/using "Launch Control". Great AC/HAC/Oldies/Country imaging package with monthly updates. Produced by CC SRVP Creative Jim Cook. It's a lease. No barter spots so it's LIM compliant. Just need to pony up the $$$....but who's got it these daze, right? ...not WRSN...but WRAL does...
______________

HAHAHAHA! "We play more Fleetwood Mac than WMAG or WRAL-FM! Sunny 93.9!"

Actually, WRAL, to me, sounds more like Q99 (WSLQ). They both have streaks of about 3 good songs, and they do both have enjoyable jingles.

Speaking of imaging, does anyone else think Oldies 93 is going a bit overboard? I mean a jingle after every 1-2 songs?!? I just have to yell "IMAGING" each time it comes on. And sometimes, the jingle clashes with the song that was just on, and the one that comes on after it - it sounds really trashy.

Mix 101.5 WRAL-FM

I wish we had WRAL-FM here in the Charlotte market. I listen to Mix 101.5 a lot online.

Tsk Tsk indeed. Looking back through the thread, this wasn't about Joe's character or his jovial nature. Just business, Cap, you can understand that. No offense intended. Thanks for setting me straight.

It's a very good station... I listen to it more than anything else. More interesting and upbeat than the average AC.
______________

The real answer would be to cut down on the imaging and add personality breaks. Not that was/this is crap. It keeps the imaging from burning and/or overtaking the station, and adds REAL personality. Anyone remember what that is?

And a personality break is not :10sec or less, for those PD's who came up thru the 80's.

Oldies 93

Yeah, they have kinda lost some of the personality aspect, too. Back when they used more of the old Drake jingles package (they stil use the 20/20 news bed), they didn't overplay the jingles and the talent really shined. Now it's dull, jingle-oriented, and sounds repetitive after about a day or two of listening.

When I can't get Oldies 93 (ie: at VT...at least not without some creative outdoor antenna-ing or riding in my car), I listen to 1050 CHUM's webstream. They have a wider selection of music and they at least play different jingles between songs. Plus they have the personality aspect going for them.

Unfortunately in N. High Point, you have to be in just the right spot to get WRAL-FM, unless you have some light tropo going. Last time I was listening, 101.5 was fighting between WRAL-FM and some classic rocker that was coming in intermittantly. Macy Gray vs. the Allman Brothers, anyone?

Speaking of Charlotte, I liked 104.7 much better as Star as opposed to K.
