Wow Clear Channel, are you really that greedy?

I don't know why I never checked this out when they made the frequency flip, but did anyone notice what they've done with the CC HD channels? They have 94.5's HD-2 streaming a Hot AC-leaning AC format, a little hotter than the old Lite FM before the flip. What gets me is that they dropped the Club Phusion dance format on Channel and threw on Smooth Jazz on the 99.9 HD-2 channel. So essentially, Lite FM has two HD channels. The website is promoting the smooth jazz format on 99.9. Wouldn't it make sense to put something CHR-related on Channel's HD-2?

Other noticeable changes:

Mix 1077's HD-2 dropped Gen X and became all 80's which kinda sucks now especially when 94.5's HD-2 is playing quite a bit of 80s.

WTUE's HD-2 is 980 WONE in HD which I do like for the Browns game except there's a HUGE delay.

It looks as if The X still has the alternative format on their HD-2 which actually sounds really good. I'm not sure if Big 1065 has one or not, their signal is so weak and my HD Radio currently has a ghetto antenna so I'm not able to pick it up half the time.

CC really lets Channel slip so much that they have no local programming on the only CHR in town and is giving Lite FM two HD-2 channels. Maybe I'm complaining for no reason, I just don't see the logic in giving CHR listeners smooth jazz? Although, I hear not many people listen to the HD channels anyway!

BTW, the AC format on 94.5 HD-2 isn't that horrible... basically a more adult Mix 1077.

Switching around HD channels is not being "greedy"... And the few people that listen to HD Radio are radio nerds enough to seek out a format no matter what subchannel it's on.

How much of a delay is there? On WONE (980-AM), there is already a seven-second dleay between the TV picture and what comes over the radio. As one who usually turns down the TV sound on the Browns' games and listens to the radio feed, I've always wished WONE would turn that delay off when airing the games.

We're talking minutes. I'd say a good 60-90 seconds if not more.

I used to follow the formats on HD2 signals, even though I didn't have an HD radio, and still don't. I remember Mix 107.7 had a Christian AC format on their HD-2 carrier a couple years back. Looks like they dumped it. Mix with an 80s HD-2 subchannel? That's where the 80s SHOULD go. Mix needs to dump the 80s and move to a 90s, 2000s and today-type format. The 80s are becoming less and less revelant every day that passes.

Christian AC was indeed the format they launched with on their HD-2. They dumped that and tried Gen X. Dumped that and now they're back to All 80s. They've backed off the 80s some on the HD-1 but still more than what's needed for a Hot AC today. Mix 1079 does a good job, and so does Dial-Global's national Hot AC feed. I've heard them play Rihanna, Pitbull, LMFAO, and Destiny's Child. It's practically Adult CHR. From my house here in Northridge (suburb of Dayton), I've been able to pick up 24/7 Dial-Global staiton, 96.7 WKOV from Jackson/Wellston which is amazing to get and they sound good despite it being satellite and poorly automated. 95XIL has also been one I've been able to get which is practically a Z93 clone. Mix 1077 is a heritage Hot AC so they're scared to drop the 80s because it's always worked for them. I've learned to stop complaining because Jeff Stevens ain't gonna drop em for good! :D

Wow...you're picking up 95XIL in Northridge??? I used to work for them back in the late 80s/early 90s, *and* my wife grew up in Northridge <the Springfield Northridge...is there another one?>

Anyway...I had nothing important to add to this convo, just found it neat to see a station from my past mentioned on this thread. Carry on.

Yeah there's another Northridge, near Vandalia in Dayton... you could call it Dayton. Either way, that's amazing how clear it comes in. The transmitter is quite a distance from Dayton.

Jack,

What format was it when you worked there because I know they had quite a bit of a format shuffle in the 80s and 90s.

It was AC. It is so funny to go into town now and hear them playing rap because that was a MAJOR no-no when I worked there...the research showed that the audience didn't want to hear it at all.

I grew up in Parkersburg...they were top 40 when first signing on in the 70s, so they've actually just gone back to their roots.

95.1 is either WAJI, Fort Wayne (mostly) or WXIL when the band is up in the Dayton area. I've heard WKOV in the area but remember listening to them on a Saturday night while camping on some private land on a hill by the rest area on 33. It was a satellite 70s show with a jock named "Archer" and apparently was part of their regular satellite service. Sounded good, no dead air, no miscues, no joining songs in the middle, so at least then, not bad.

WKOV for many years was on the ABC AC service ("Starstation" which I think later became known as "Hits and Favorites") and branded as "Star 96.7." Sometime after that, they changed to a Hot AC feed from WW1 which became Dial Global and changed to "Mix." Back in the Star days, they used to run Dick Bartley on Saturday nights, but must have changed to take the 70's show later on.

The 70s show (and this was probably 3 or more years ago) apparently was part of their regular satellite feed, "Archer" ran until about about 1am, anther jock continued the 70s show until 3 and that same jock went back to the regular format at 3.

That's interesting. Archer programs the CHR service which I heard they stopped offering to new affiliates, "Hits Now". That may explain why the Hot AC service has been more "Adult CHR" sounding. Also, interesting you didn't hear any miscues then. They are all over the place now. The Hot AC format doesn't even call themselves "80's, 90's, Now" anymore. They dropped the 80s. The jingles on WKOV still run the outdated imaging and the rejoin from breaks to the satellite feed is always off. I'm sure even listeners can tell it's not local. :p

i doubt they care.. The WKOV license has a permit to move to Eastern OH which means Jackson will not get to hear them anymore...so....the Hot AC satellite is just a filler.

What does the parent stations format have to do with what format plays on the additional HD channels? That is like saying, well how silly, XM has country next to Dance and christian. It is a flick of the knob. I would like to see more diversity in HD. Really, you are going to create a flanker signal out an HD?? With just a few percent market penetration with radios? Sort of like flanking with xm. If I really wanted to come after your main analog channel I would not give a DARN rather it was on HD2. Now in a few years and there is a bigger radio base then it may make sense, but not now. And since there are no spots on any of the HD2's cept for WONE simulcast. Its all moot anyhow. so how exactly does greed play into it? ??? Looks good as a slug line though I guess.

Harb.
