Wow! That's Just What Atlanta Needs, Another Talker!

I was wondering what happen to AM 11-60 "The CFO" when to my surprise, I tune in Monday at 10 am to hear Dr Laura, Dr. Joy Browne, and Lou Dobbs! Worst let, the station has changed its slogan from "the CFO" to now "The Talk Of The Town"! All I can say is good luck! Do you know kind of competition this East Point station (20 miles near yours truly) has against the big boys (WSGT, WSB-AM, & WGKA)? Heck, you tell me!

WGST and WGKA are the big boys? Are you kidding me? They are in just a step above cb radio. Big boys, what a laugh.

"Breaker 1-9 .... Breaker 1-9 .... anyone out there got your ears on? C'mon on back."

Oh the memories.

Looks like we got us a con-voy.

I have been listening to Phil Hendrie during the 6-8PM slot and one of 1160's biggest challenge, as if they didn't have enough, is their directional signal. Towards sunset, even before they power down, they already have interference from the 50,000 watt station out of Nashville on the same frequency coming on top of them.

In my opinion the bigger challenge is having the two "doctors" on the same station.

Thanks for mentioning this. I didn't even know about this station, nor that Phil was back. Listened yesterday and it was nice hearing his take on life again.

Ohh sorry I thought you were referring to TRG or the unofficial announcement of Steve and Vicki on B98. (sarcasm)

There is no rhyme nor reason to the line up. It's like whatever show was available and free they put it on the air. WGKA is bad, but 1160's line up is just plain silly. My prediction is in 2 years from now they will have a .4 share.

Why is WGKA bad? What would you prefer? Medved's show is entertaining because he relishes dissent. Dennis Prager is one of the more intelligent folks on any radio station with a firm grasp of explaining a point without being arrogant like Laura Ingraham. And I don't even agree with some of his religious points. As for the weird mix on 1160. Why does that matter? How many local affiliate TV stations program the same type of fodder all day long?

Why is WGKA bad? If you look at their ratings that will give you the answer. Nobody listens to them. Look at their revenue. That is the true gauge of how bad they are. WGKA could be a player, they just don't know how.

Okay, ratings bad. But the station is actually decent to listen to.

WGKA is IMO a better listen than WGST outside of Rush and Braves. But both stations are trying to get some ratings on the cheap, with mostly if not all syndicated content. WCFO could do better, if they get lucky with Dr. Laura and the rest of their mix. Some local shows would improve things, but that's not any of these stations' business model.

Problem is, once you get past Rush and Sean and Boortz and Clark and Dr. Laura and Savage and Ramsey, you're into the second tier. That leaves Beck and Ingraham and Bennett and Prager and Reagan and Randi. Then you have all of your weekend shows like Handel and Cigar Dave and all of the gardening, handyman, and car shows. Then you're really scraping the bottom of the barrel after that.

I thought that Chris Krok was a great talent with a good niche, but that means producing your own show with its attendant costs (unless he pulls a Moby and does it himself)

I prefer Medved over Sean every afternoon. Sean's head is getting bigger if that's possible. I think Medved does a better job of explaining his point. Sean just tries to out yell you. Medved also mixes it up and goes off topic.

When it comes to news though... WGKA is always a step behind even GST which is pretty bad. They just don't have good news coverage it is feeble at best.. not good enough to call themselves a news/talk station.. maybe they should be called just a talk station. Will the new talk station have real news coverage?

Aren't we talking law of diminishing returns here? Atlanta's top conservative talk station is WSB, then WGST is way down the pile, WGKA several orders of magnitude below that, and finally WCFO...????

The point is, second- and third-tier conservative talkers can't get any traction. If you had four country stations, one with eights and nines, and three of them couldn't pull a three share together, those three would change formats.

Something else must be driving these owners to change formats to conservative talk.

Let's see... WCFO's owner kicked off Air America which occasionally brought listeners to 1690, for his own cuckoo-bird format that has no ratings... ideology driving his decisions... nah...

I thought Sean was MUCH better when he was local on WGST. Now he's so boring that you pray for a guest interview. I wonder if he succeeds in his timeslot by default--there's not too many shows live from 3-6, versus the traffic jam in the 9-noon slot.

I enjoy reading Medved, but on the air he just doesn't do it for me.

I wouldn't call WGKA several orders of magnitude below WGST. That's not a compliment to WGKA--that's a slam on WGST.

I'm surprised that Air America did that badly versus some of Weber's other experiments. I don't think he would have dumped AA if the money wasn't there, though.

Although you can start the AA death watch with the firing of Randi Rhodes...while I don't agree with her she did have the only good show on the network. If AA was serious they would try to get Jello Biafra to do a show. Now THAT would be fun, liberal, and topical, whether you agree with him or not.
