This week I had to take my wife to the dentist unexpectedly. A good client of mine had a quick sports promo that needed to be on quick. I had brought my iPad with me, and an Audio Technica AT2020 USB mic. I had been experimenting with it, but hadn't thought I would need to use it right away. I cut the promo from the driver seat of the Jeep, and it was on in 15 min.
You can use the iPad with the Apple "camera connection kit" that has a USB connector. This mic seems to be about the only one that works as it's current draw doesn't sap the power from the iPad. (only about 20ma wight he current version 4.3) the AT mic doesn't have a headphone monitor so there is no extra load..and it is REALLY good!
Using the "Multitrack DAW" app from iTunes (9.99 for 8 tracks) works well..and with that app you get an EQ and Compressor plug in as well as up to 24 tracks..(8 tracks with the initial app, and only 16 bucks for 16 more stereo tracks!) do any of you remember how much a 24 track tape machine was in the 80's? This is scary cool. Get even a cheaper first generation iPad and keep it with you..

You can also load in a lot of your most used production music/effects jingles into the iPod library in the iPad and you can import tracks..individual track level controls..and you are golden. And this time it bailed me out with a really decent quality WAV track I was able to send directly to my client!
