WOWO's Bob Chase Passes Away At 90

Bob Chase, the voice of the Fort Wayne Komets hockey team for over 60 years, and an on air presence at WOWO for most of that time, died early this morning at the age of 90. He could be heard doing Komets games over the entire eastern US and much of eastern Canada with WOWO's old 50K nighttime signal, and got some national recognition just last year when Doc Emrick, who grew up listening to Chase, featured him on an NHL broadcast last season. Here's the link to WOWO's online story. http://www.wowo.com/wowo-legend-bob-chase-dies-age-90/

I remember listening to Bob when I was a very young man. The voice of the Ft. Wayne Komets. RIP Bob.

Yes, this is sad news indeed.

I remember being a kid when WOWO was still clear channel. Chase's call of Komet games would come
booming into my bedroom. Later I would live in WOWOland and catch a number of Komet games in person.
Like Vin Scully I always admired his ability to remain mentally sharp and to keep working at a very
advanced age.

Bob wasn't working this season because he had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. He had been in the hospital and was (I believe) in outpatient treatment for this, with every intention of at least going back to home games.
Shane Albahrani had been doing road games for some time, and started the season for Bob. It's been said Shane takes over as the official voice of the K's now.
In my younger days I would have thought WISE-TV's Kent Hormann would have taken over the air chair, but Shane does a damn good job, and now we settle in to Radio Rinkside with him.
But let it be said, Bob Chase IS A RADIO LEGEND.
