WOXY/WAOL Flippng to Spanish

from Radio-Insight's twitter:

First Media has LMA'd Variety Hits "97.7 & 99.5 Max-FM" WOXY/WAOL Cincinnati to TSJ Radio LLC. Stations will flip to Spanish on 11/1.

Only the station with the signal is flipping. 99.5 will be the train wreck it currently is, but 97.7 goes Spanish. According to the article on this site, anyway.

It's a shame that 1160 couldn't have LMA'd 97.7. It would've been nice to hear a clearer signal especially in the winter.

They *could* have... for a price. First isn't in the business to own radio stations.. Someone could have LMA'ed them awhile ago.. Just got to have the cash to do so.

Well, here is the deal. We looked at buying it as i don't like to do leases. They never offered that, anyway.

They wanted to package that with the other FM, S. E. of us. That one had no value to me and they must have thought i was a sucker as they wanted 6 million, firm. We actually would like an FM to pair with each of our AM's. I am sniffing around a suburban FM right now.
To me, OXY was worth 2 mil, tops. I think that First was "blue skied" by another broker into thinking that the properties were
worth 6.
I think prices will get worse before they get better and sometimes patience pays off. You never know when someone can or cannot close on a deal.
Now that i am done with my FM upgrade in Lexington and the tune up in Albany, i can pay some attention to The Queen City.
Did i ever mention how much i love Cincinnati? I'd move there if Mrs. JRY would consent.....
Hey, its radio, stay tuned.

Apparently the Spanish station ("La Mega 97.7") had some issues getting their studio set up so the launch date has been pushed back. Kiesewetter says they're targeting 11/15 and La Mega's Facebook said they'll definitely be on by 11/19, so I guess we can expect the launch sometime that week.

For a likely preview of what the station will sound like, check out TSJ's station in Columbus:
http://www.lamega1031.com

The music is primarily Regional Mexican, but they incorporate a healthy dose of Latin pop, Tropical, and even some Salsa and Recuerdo-type classic hits--an unusual Spanish mix format, from what I've seen. And of course plenty of jocks cutting it up en español. From what I'm gathering, my guess is that La Mega Cincy is going to be very similar.

(A disclaimer on the Columbus link: They do stream online, but they don't seem to be the best at restarting the stream quickly when it dies.)

Considering that First bought WOXY in 2004 for 5.4 million, I think they are looking for a return on that investment, and nothing else.

IIRC, both WAXZ and WAOL sold for 2.5 million.

So, First spent almost 8 million on three pea-shooters.

Boggles the mind.

I hate replying to myself since I can't edit my original post, but I found the figures:

WOXY(FM) Oxford (Cincinnati), Ohio
PRICE: $5.64 million
...
WAXZ(FM) Georgetown and WAOL(FM) Ripley (Cincinnati), Ohio
PRICE: $4.06 million

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/152343-Changing_Hands.php

9.7 million. Still boggles the mind.

At least they were able to upgrade 97.7. 2 mill for 99.5 was way out of line since they were not able to move that stick closer to Cincinnati.

Actually, we don't know if they could have moved 99.5 or not. They had applications into the FCC to move 99.5 to Amelia, which would have made it the eastside equivalent of what 97.7 is now. It was complicated, and involved moving WOBO to help fill in some of the population that would lose service if 99.5 moved. You can see all of the dismissed applications on the WAOL Application page at fcc.gov. I think they gave up when the economy tanked.

I also wonder if 99.3 would object to the 99.5 move? It might have made more since to purchase 99.3, and moved them closer to Cincinnati.

Hope it's pushed back to 2025

99.3 in Aurora, IN?

It can be had but it is wedged in pretty tight and cannot be moved.

Nope. Not 2025....it's NOW - been with the new "La Mega" format since early this morning. Enjoy! ;D

Not only that they are now streaming here:

http://lamega977.com/

While they may have the means to stream...clicking on any of the streaming options on their page, for me; returned a 404 link "Page not Found".

If it's a full Spanish station, then why are some of the things on their current homepage in English? Dumb question, I know.
