WOYK

So I'm rolling down to York to stay with some friends for this big Superbowl weekend and I want to catch up on some sports and hear a little of the Don and Mike show so I tune over to 1350 and it keeps going in and out. Not the signal but the broadcast. Every 5 minutes it just pops out and then pops back in 30 seconds later. This continues Thursday and Friday for awhile and then zip.....gone completely.
Now it's Saturday morning and it's still gone. I know it rained and yea, there was a touch of wind but for God's sake this is a little ridiculous don't ya think!? What's the deal with this station? Who owns it and don't they have an engineer?

I think blaming verizon only flys so far. At least 56 hours off air? Sorry, I don't buy it.
If you don't want to invest in broadcast quality equipment or have a good back up system in place
for these type of interuptions then perhaps running a radio station is not not what you should
be doing.

Your math is interesting- 56 hours? It was no where near that. When you have the very newest generation in phone lines and Verizon tells you that a back up is not necessary (and you think they’d WANT to sell you something), this is what happens. Obviously, a back up will now be reconsidered. By the way, tell us about your many years of running a radio station. We’d be happy to learn from your vast experience.

Okay Jim...where to start....

1 ) 56 hours from the time I first tuned in till I posted, the signal was unlistenable and a side note to this is I went to the store Sunday evening during the 2nd quarter and the station was still unlistenable so if ya wanna tack another 36 hours onto the 56....my "math" says 92 hours. This my friend is unacceptable by any standard. Listener or advertiser.

2) a back up will now be reconsidered? That's GM talk for "when it fixes itself we'll backburner it till it happens again". How long till you reconsider it? By then I'd think most of your listening audience will have had enough of this and never come back.

3) While I spent many years running different radio stations, I am now in business for myself and I know that one rule always applies, keep your customers happy. While I might just be a poster on a radio board to you, I am still a potential listener that you chose to use sarcasm with when confronted with criticism. If I run a resturant and my food makes people sick, I either stop serving it or upgrade it so it's edible. When a customer confronts me on my poor quality of eats, I don't come back with, "tell me about your many years of running a resturant. I'd be happy to learn from your vast experience." I doubt they'd be coming back, they'd just go find another place to eat.

That being said, since WOYK was serving such poor quality food, I went somewhere else to eat and found 1460 The Ticket. Maybe the menu is a little different but so far I'm not sick.

My friend, again your math does not work. Obviously, your issues with WOYK go much deeper and it’s no use to continue this thread. A lot of us in this business are working hard and we’re getting tired of being attacked on these boards -- quoting you here
“ If you don't want to invest in broadcast quality equipment or have a good back up system in place for these type of interuptions then perhaps running a radio station is not not what you should be doing.”

Or an example from a post from Bubba Bob

“Stations such as this aren't news leaders, news updaters or anything close. They are pretenders where everything is mostly rip-and-read. The people employed at these facilties aren't broadcast journalists, not having the skills to update and write news. The bottom line is they don't have the qualified staff, and, management doesn't care to or have the funds to pay experienced people in this field. It's outfits like WOYK and WHP which have desecrated the business, forcing many qaulified people out and into other arenas.”

What—are they egg-sucking dogs?

The journalists at WHP have won a number of Joe Snyder awards from the Pennsylvania Associated Press. They don’t have the skills to update and write news? They did not deserve that unkind shot. Obviously, they do have the skills if you look at the number of honors they have received.

Our business has enough issues these days – see the Clear Channel spending freeze. Why do you and others want to spend your time tearing it down?

Post what you want now- those of us who are still trying to get it done these days just don’t need this continued “dis-couragement”.

So, based on experience and market size, you're telling me the salaries are where they should be? Granted, that's not your fault but only the company's. The CC's, Citadel's and Cumulus outfits have grossly damaged the industry since deregulation in the '90s.

However, when I turn on the radio and blatantly hear announcers misprouncing words, blowing words, much less horrible verbage, I have a problem. That's not the problem of any company, that's lack of homework and research on the part of the announcer.

Now, I have some statistics on salary structure for the various levels in the industry. I'm interested in hearing yours.

Jim,

I think I was posting what I wanted before you gave me permission to do so but anyways....

My only issue with WOYK is that it can't stay on the air. I have no history with the station nor do I know anyone that does. I also could care less about salary structure like Bubba Bob does.

What I do take issue with is your deflection of responsibility to listeners and advertisers.

Verizon, my math, Bubba Bob, WHP......

If your product can't stay consistantly on the air, find out why and fix it or my little posting will be the least of your "dis-couragement"

Jim I not saying that you have a crappy product, I think WOYK has a lot of potential with ESPN and Don & Mike and the local programming, it's just a shame to see it being wasted because of something so crucial to it's success.....staying on the air.
