WPAM 1450AM Pottsville...

If WPAM is still broadcasting from the same building -- that grand 1950's redoubt on Lawton's Hill -- they are about thirty feet from the heavily attended Nativity High School.

So maybe the nearest, nearby Youth Of America, Class of 2014, is being approached for their opinions? WPAM *is* kinda like having your own high school station. Parents should hate such a situation -- which instantly makes things appeal to renegade offspring.

Some of the stuff might make we older rock and rollers grit their teeth in impatience, but at least it's a form of music on the AM dial.

Oh -- after reading what I wrote :

I hope there's no misunderstanding. WPAM has been a professionally staffed station for the longest while. And the notion that they exist as a music station on AM in 2013 is a statement of communications stick-to-it-iveness

I was referencing the proximity of the station to Nativity. The station probably comes in on the water fountains or the lobby trophies.

Late last week and weekend it was all rap and r and b. Today I switched it back on, and it was back to all rock. You may be correct, Steve, maybe some of the music choice is for the nearby Nativity high school.

I agree Steve that it sure is nice to hear some music on the AM dial. WPAM was a station I grew up with. Living in Schuylkill County all my life, I can recall during my younger years growing up with WPAM, WPPA and WLSH. It would be cool if PAM could become what it once was.

That radio station is historical. I co-hosted a weekly racing show there in 2006 and 2007. Not sure what its like there today but back then they had vintage newspaper clippings and an unbelievable collection of music. You walked into that building and it was like taking a great trip down memory lane. Bob Murray was the station manager at the time. Good times. Long live WPAM!

I worked there years ago during its talk period -- 1997/98. It was Imus in the Morning, followed by the Fabulous Sports Babe, then me, followed by Dr. Laura, the Wall Street Journal afternoon show (I forget its title), then Tom Leykis. But we were more or less Classic Rock on weekends. Bob Murray was the PD then. He's a great guy and a great radio guy! Curran LMA'ed the station to T-102/WPPA and we were all out the door. From what I understand, Bob came back into the picture sometime around 2001 or so. I think he was owner, or part owner. It is neat to hear someone is still trying to make music work on AM. And if Bob's still involved, don't count him out. He's smart and he's tough.

I remember your talk show LA. It was on at 2 pm. I called you once about the Homestead Act.

And I heard ACDC's Jailbreak three times over last weekend. I also heard Metallica's Whiplash which I was astonished to hear on AM radio.

WPAM is not a joke; it is 'merely' another music station victim on a dial not known for music anymore on any important scale -- here or nationally.

Several years back, WWKBW tried Oldies from a similar spot on the dial. With a service area of maybe one square mile per watt (and 50,000 watts in support) the grand 'KB pulled shares like 0.5.

The only places on the dial where music works here and elsewhere is at stations that consistently have been offering it through the years. 'KB had not been doing music for years when they gave it the renaissance treatment. That absence probably had a lot to do with the low rating, but we'll never know.

Coming into these parts daily are WWSM, WLSH, WEEU and WPPA. Those first two have been playing music since we moved in here 20 years ago. The second two are full-service (or at least as full-service as is possible).
Although low, WWSM shows in the occasional Harrisburg book ; WLSH shows in the Wilkes-Barre book. Not bad for a couple of directional daytime mono AMers.

But they've been playing music all along.

By the way : Does anyone remember WMBT showing in, say, the S/WB book? The guess here is that they might have dented it.

In any case, the changes in format for WPAM since we moved here didn't help the continuity enjoyed by WWSM and WLSH. WPAM just happens to occupy what might be the lowest form of media life -- a graveyard channel. To me, that's having both ears tied behind your back, not a 'joke'. At least they're playing music.

Arminius, when you get the opportunity switch to 1450am. They have been playing the same 10 songs over back to back for the past three weeks. Whitney Houston, hootie and the blowfish, lady gaga, and a few other r and b songs. Not sure what is going on now but trust me there's been no ACDC on for almost a month. I will usually flip the station on when going into work.

Greenflag, I check in when I am going to and from work too. I have noticed the Hootie & Whitney marathon. I heard ACDC's Jailbreak 3 separate times last month. Each was followed by a different song. I remember Paper Money by Montrose followed one time and Battery by Metallica followed another time.

Radio-Locator still lists WPAM as 'off the air'.

Speaking of WWSM, During the TMI accident, I listened pretty regularly to the then WAHT signal, with Fred Williams holding court. Say what you will about the gent, he was the right man for the job when all the industry spokespeople were lying up a storm, and the people around the plant were calling in their horror stories.
The signal had a bit of a rhythm to it up here; not one that lent itself to casual listening.

By the way : Does anyone remember WMBT showing in, say, the S/WB book? The guess here is that they might have dented it.

The 1530 signal was audible up here, but not likely to be a threat to any of the area stations at the time.

This is an incredibly smart move. There is no Country station that can be heard in this pretty sizeable blue-collar town. They should have an instant audience...

Grrrr .... and ha ..... so much for trying to get an ID now from that new PA 1450 station in Milford -- also Country.

Great to hear that WPAM is staying with it ..... this anachronism on a 'class IV' channel (perhaps the lowest form of media life) .... and playing MUSIC of some sort.

Apologies for the back-to-back posts, but rather than start a new thread:

WPAM has been off the air now (May 11th) for about a week.
At last listen they sounded like some form of Country format. And in recent weeks WAZL 1490 has been playing what sounds like a syndicated Country format.

There is little overlap of the two signals, even where I live with the good radios, roughly halfway between the two towers. But there must have been some buzz in the region -- maybe some from the Nash-FM fallout? -- or else there would not have been changes at two graveyarders.

Pottsville proper, at the geographic and population heart of unrated Schuylkill County, doesn't have a full-time sports station. Perhaps that's an opening for 1450, if and when.
Since we moved here 18 years ago, WPAM has kept those same letters through Oldies (with Yankees and Flyers games), Hot Talk (Imus, Leykis, Schlessinger), a few forms of Classic Rock, Silent, Death Metal, Stunting, hybrid Country, and now Silent again.
WPPA runs a lot of sports, but mostly at night. And at night, WPPA doesn't get all the way either to Minersville or Port Carbon. Sports might be the way for WPAM to go next. Sports is still a healthy AM format in lots of places.
At present, the nearest audible Sports stations to here in the day are from Allentown (1470) and Elizabethtown (1600). But no one in Pottsville tunes either of those in.
