WPAQ Mt. Airy, NC founder and owner Ralph Epperson has died

The Associated Press is reporting the death of Ralph Epperson, his WPAQ AM radio station aired the twanging voices and strumming banjos of mountain folk music long after corporations took over most broadcast programming, he died Wednesday. WPAQ may well have been the first Americana station on the air.Ralph Epperson 85, built WPAQ a 10,000 watt daytimer on 740 in 1948. The station still plays bluegrass msuic.

NPR also did a really good feature on All Things Considered about Mr. Epperson and WPAQ! What a true radio legend!
