WPBP 104.5 Pearl

According to Radio-Locator. 104.5 is only 20 watts but I can sometimes pick it up close to 20 miles away. When it was 40 watts from Brandon, it barely made it into Pearl and would fade out not long after leaving the city limits around 5 miles give or take. Unless they raised the antenna a lot higher than it was, Its hard to believe a flea power 20 watt station can get out that far.

It's an unusual format. I've heard everything from classic rock from the 70's all the way up to current top 40 dance music. You might hear Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith followed directly by Justin Bieber and One Direction. There are no jocks, but you hear a spot for a sign company and some stuff about the city of Pearl and football on friday night.

Hey all -

Adding to the other sentiments... has anyone else noticed the blatant unedited commercial airings on this non-commercial LPFM station? I was listening to the Pearl football game on Friday and was shocked to hear outright commercials for M&F Bank, for instance.

I heard another LPFM doing the same thing a few years ago. There was some discussion about it at the time, and I seem to remember someone remarking that there is some provision for LPFMs to air underwriting announcements (similar to spots) in the same fashion that non-comms do. I don't know if that is true.

These were certainly not underwriting announcements - there were the familiar calls to action, pricing information, et cetera. Those ads were identical to what airs on commercial stations.

This appears to be more and more common. regretfully. When the FCC grants you a license with restrictions, you would do well to follow them. Those who don't eventually get outed..ot should.

I'm not sure if they are still doing it, but I've heard Pearl football simulcast on a full power station don't remember which, but I think it was WJDX using the same announcers as WPBP. they are also broadcasting Pearl football WUFX 35 TV. maybe the commercials are intended for the TV or commercial radio broadcast.

The best thing that they could do is give the station over to the kids at Pearl High School for a little while during the broadcast day and let the kids learn a little bit about broadcasting. These were my fondest memories during my High School years in the Philadelphia, PA suburbs where we had a small 10 watt station where the kids (my self included) learned a little bit and some parlayed that action into a career.

I did have a chance to speak with one of the WPBP-LP operators on Tuesday and he assured me that the audio portion of Friday night's Pearl High School football game was straight from the WUFX 35 telecast, commercials and all. Thankfully, it was an oversight that had not happened up to that point, not was it anticipated to happen again.

Not only the sign company, but the Mississippi Braves as well. There was also an ad for the True South golf event from back in the summer that was heard on other stations too.

Wait till hundreds of LPFM's flood the airwaves. They will plead lack of revenue, and the rules will be laxed.
