WPBP-LP moves to 104.5

I found this out the other day while scanning the dial. When did it actually happen and why?

Must have been within the past few days. They had to change frequency for the transmitter site move from near Crossgates in Brandon to Center City Drive in Pearl. The new site is right next to Pearl High School on one of the highest points in the city of Pearl. They had to reduce ERP, but the extra height should make a difference in coverage.

Isn't it owned by the city of Pearl now? I don't think they'd want to keep playing religious music just to avoid any trouble.

What trouble? They can play any format they want as long as everything meets non-comm requirements.

Local governments around the country have owned broadcast stations since the invention of radio. Usually their rationale was to broadcast government announcements, school lunch menus, city council meetings, etc. And to fill in the times between such programming, they would perhaps play music.

As to broadcasting music of a particular religious belief, even if it is a broadly general Christian belief, is pretty blatantly a violation of the separation of church and state as stated in the U.S. Constitution. We all believe in the U.S. Constitution.

I hope ya'll understand my point. I'm all for religion. I'm all for one expressing his beliefs. Thank you.

I'm not a religious person, really, certainly not a card-carrying member of any particular denomination. But I have strong disagreements with the way the so-called separation of church and state thing has played out with regards to local and state governments. A cross on a water tower is not (Congress, or a city) established a law to respect one religion over another. Nor is a city-owned nativity scene at Christmas, or running religious programming on a city-owned radio or television station.

It doesn't appeal to me, but if the town generally is Christian in belief then there should be no real harm in carrying local church services, as that would be a form of serving the community. I would expect Muslim services in Dearborn or Jewish services in Boca Raton, for example. Whatever the community desires.

I just worry that someone will have a problem with it, and cost the city of Pearl enough money to make them chuck the whole idea of running a nice little LPFM into the wastebasket.
