94.3 and 1240 in Jackson is not longer playing hip hop, RnB and blues. The last I checked I heard Chicago, Elton John and oddly Dottie West's "Country Sunshine" and Englebert Humperdink "After the Lovin". I thought it sounded like classic hits but then threw a curve ball with the Humperdink and "I was raised on Country Sunshine" which I haven't heard in years. BTW AM 1240 has been off the air since bad weather came through. Which is technically illegal to have the translator still operating. Not sure anyone noticed since 1240 is so messed up you can barely hear it anyway. But I could still get it at my location better at my location than the translator, before it broke down.

I noticed that too. I'm not sure who was leasing 1240 / 94.3 from the owners, but I suspect someone got behind on their lease payment. Not sure why 1240 is still off - normally the station engineer is pretty quick to get it back on.

Have not listened to them in quite a while, however I Knew that what they were putting out did't stand a chance of making it & that was 6 month ago

780, 970, 1150, 1240,1300, 90.1, 90.5,93.1, 94,3, 95.5, 97.7, 99.1, 99.7, 100.5, 100.9, 103.5 and 107.1 all have some form of R&B, blues, gospel, urban, hip hop etc. Even though Jackson has a very large black population, it could be that there is an over saturation of black formatted stations and the audience is spread too thin. And yes I know that all blacks don't listen to the same music (before anyone get all pc on me). WPBQ played a little bit of several styles of music. I doubt they could compete with the format changing several times a day. Especially with a tiny FM translator and a broken down AM signal. They used to have a great signal when it was ESPN. Went to pot when ESPN left and took their transmitter. FM is surprisingly good in a car. Not so much in the house sandwiched between K-Love and Air One.

33 stations, not including LPFMs and Translators, are "home" to the Jackson metro. The metro is 49% Black and 47% Non-Hispanic white. It would be reasonable to expect that 16 to 18 stations might target African Americans. And that's what we have there. The market, indeed, tends to balance itself out.

If you consider just the city of Jackson, where the strongest signals are, the percentage of blacks is around 82 percent. Which according to Google is the highest in the nation. Which explains why there are so many black stations. But WPBQ was mostly a block format with a few hours of black gospel, blues in the afternoon, hip hop at night and a hodge podge of other music. You never knew exactly what you were going to hear when you tuned in. Which made it quite interesting to listen too. But apparently not very successful.

PS I shouldn't have included 107.1 which is currently rock. I should have put 107.5.

I read this thread on Tuesday, May 21. I went to the stations' website to listen. I have thus far only heard gospel music. I am often in the same building where the stations are located and speak to Katheryn, their manager. I have heard nothing of a change.

I cannot receive this station at my home. However, today (Wednesday), I was in Jackson and put it on the FM station. The first song was a horrible country and Western song. However, afterward I heard Neil Diamond, Michael Buble, Olivia Newton John, Billy Joel, and (my favorite) Barbra Streisand. I asked someone inside the building where the station is located about the radio station. This man lives in Sunflower County, but he said that he had heard that the people who presently held the license had done something incorrectly and that the station had not been sold to the new owners.

I keep trying to listen to the station online. It appears that their gospel, blues, and rhythm and blues (plus the talk shows) are being streamed. Yet, in my car (although I cannot pick up the station well at my home), the new format is what I can hear.

Is it possible that the station is broadcasting one type of format but streaming the old one?
