WPBS (AM) 1040 sold

WPBS in Conyers has sold for $700,000. It sold in 2005 for $2,250,000. At that time, it was 12,000 watts daytime. Now it's 50,000 watts daytime.

The value of AM stations is based on population count inside the 2 mV/m contour.

WPBS has 1,714,021. 89,898 of that total are Asian. The buyer is paying 41 centers per person.

The new 1260 being moved in from Cartersville will have 1,069,599 in its 2 mV/m contour. Of that total, 35,467 are Asian; 93,620 are Hispanic and 609,823 are African American.

Meanwhile WQXI 790 just sold for $850,000. The buyer has been leasing WPBS. WQXI has 3,872,407 people in its 2 mV/m daytime contour. 221,061 are Asian. The buyer is paying only 22 cents per listener. FM translators which are secondary signals with a maximum allowed output power of 250 watts, meaning they can be bumped off the air if interference is caused to a full power FM, are bringing from 50 cents to $1 per person in the 60 dBu which is roughly the equivalent of the AM 2 mV/m contour.

If these two transactions are indicative of the value or large market AM signals with no revenue, FM translators are now bringing more than AM stations.
