WPBS applies for power increase

WPBS 1040kHz in Conyers has applied to increase its daytime power from 12kW to 50kW. It will stay non-directional, and a daytime+CH station. Will this increase its coverage area significantly into town or will it be another 50kW station that doesn't go anywhere with its signal power like WGUN and WCFO?

WATB 1420 (the old WAVO) licensed to Decatur (formerly AVOndale Estates), with the transmitter next to the Perimeter across from the old Softball Country Club in Scottdale, is also upping their day power to 50kw, and moving to 1430. They're also taking WGFS 1430 (Covington) dark in the process.

Speaking of WGUN, it would be nice to see a corporation like CBS/Infinity buy them out and turn them into a All-news station instead of using a 50K stick for brokered programming.

Although the day signal is decent, at least by Atlanta standards for AM, there is pea-whistle night power - 70 watts. For this reason alone WGUN will not be of interest to any of the major players.
WGUN is no longer brokered time. Georgia Rivers Salva, daughter of WGUN founder Dee Rivers, is actively running the station now and has changed the station to a mix of gospel and preaching. The imaging now calls it "gospel and guidance." She has hired a sales staff and a new morning show starts in a week or so. I'm not convinced a gospel format will be viable with Praise 97.5 around but then......I just unplug the toilets.
I think an "Air America" style format would be the ticket for a station like WGUN. After Al Franken loses his senatorial bid.....maybe he would come back for another radio gig. He was actually decent as a talk host....but politically he was like Sean Hannity....a sillysally with not much intellectual honesty. (Using "intellectual" and "Sean Hannity" in the same sentence is just weird.)
Mike Malloy and his network(can't remember the name)adding Franken and maybe Randi Rhoades, could/might/would get a 1 share.....enough to make some decent money for an AM like WGUN /WCFO/WPBS.

I've always liked Randi, even though I disagree with her. I'm surprised one of these AM bit players hasn't picked up AA. But then again, maybe the money ISN'T there, as we can't be the first to have thought of it. I wonder what's more profitable-Latino/Korean or progtalk?

The audience IS there for liberal talk. Air America, with no advertising, did .5 - 1 share 12+. I never saw any breakdowns of the audience but I can tell you that the one Al Franken remote I engineered was attended by several hundred people wearing coats and ties - in the middle of the day. YUPPIES - a very affluent and spendhappy audience - and the're suckers for liberal leaning programming.
I would think a station could do very well with a 1 share 12+ - especially if the 25-54 intown male numbers were good.....at least a few million a year. (Look at what Salzman does at "The Zone" with even smaller numbers)
Too bad Mike Malloy, or his wife, are not more aggressively trying to get an Atlanta outlet for liberal talk.

I agree with you TAYLOR on WGUN. I'd like to hear Air America or even MOYL on WGUN. MOYL is going really good now with it's network of stations growing and today it was announced the Jones Standards will cease Sept. 30th. that was started just last Jan. All this since Dial Global bought Jones. It would be nice to hear me on local radio again since I do a daily show for MOYL Network. Georgia is a wonderful lady and I have done some work for her lately.
