I would expect that 17's master control to move to the merideth hub located at channel 46's facility. So maybe we can see more HD on 17 especially nightly law and order and weekly Closer repeats.
I didn't expect an LMA...expecially with Meredith and WGCL. I guess Turner is waiting for the economy to improve...then Meredith might buy the station. In the end...I do think Turner wants out on the WPCH license.
In addition to the hub...Meredith's entire broadcast division is headquartered in Atlanta and WGCL.
They said they talked with the other "major players". Cox and WSB could not be involved because of the ownership of the AJC and the 5 radio stations. Fox and WAGA would not do it unless they bought the station (although Fox Sports will produce the games and be the official team broadcaster under the deal). Gannett has a duopoly (WXIA/WATL). CBS (WUPA) could do it, but they apparently outsourced master control out-of-market, which Turner probably did not want. And I don't think they talked to ION (WPXA)...whose "controls" are in Marietta.
I do think a 7 AM "Better Mornings Atlanta" is a possibility. A 10 PM newscast is 90% likely. I wonder if they will continue to have access to the Turner licensed movie library?
On a bittersweet note for Braves fans...this deal also marks the end of the legendary Braves annoucing team calling the games on television. Fox Sports is producing games for WPCH, and they will be using their own team. More Braves fans will probably be muting their TVs and reaching for their radio.
The radio broadcasters have been shut out for some time now. Jim Powell and Don Sutton will continue exclusively on radio. Joe Simpson and Chip Caray will do all the TV games on WPCH, Fox Sports and Sports South. Ernie Johnson Jr. and John Smoltz are out as the Peachtree TV team. I would not be surprised though to hear Smoltz partnering with some or all of these guys from time to time. Same goes for Tom Glavine who was on many of the games last year.
Of course, there were several inacuracies in the AJC article. WPCH began it's life as WJRJ-TV before being taken over by Turner, and Meridith does not own stations in both Greenville and Asheville (WHNS-TV serves the Greenville-Asheville, etc. DMA).
