WPCI "stereo"

Someone recently posted in the WPCI AM 1490 group on Facebook that the station is in stereo.

Several more strings back on the page, someone else posted that they are listed as being in HD, but they are not actually running in HD.

Anyone know details about this station? I know they don't seem to run commercials. It's more of a cool music box by the owner.

A very long time ago, WPCI did run HD Radio (I listened to it in HD. This had to be 12-13 years ago) and was in AM Stereo before that. At some point, the HD went away and has never returned. I don't know if it was by choice or if it was equipment failure. The station is basically the owners personal jukebox. No ad's, just music and id's. I run into him every now and then.

The station's owner replied, "We did broadcast in am stereo and then we broadcast in HD stereo. There have been lots of changes. We hope to be back on HD stereo next week. We don’t mean to mislead. We haven’t changed top of the hour IDs in twenty years. It’s all about the music."

So apparently they're still using an old ID that says "AM Stereo", but they're actually transmitting HD Radio (in stereo), not C-Quam AM Stereo.

But I wonder, if they couldn't be bothered to record a new hourly ID in 20 years, how could they afford to install HD Radio!? And doesn't iBiquity (or whoever bought them out) still charge licensing fees to stations transmitting HD?
