WPCV (97 Country) Lakeland, Fla.

It seems like it has an incredible signal-hearing it in Orlando last year while vacationing at Disney. So the question is, how far in any direction can the signal get out?

Matt in Texas

Can pick it up without any problems (usually) in the Fort Pierce/Port St Lucie area (probably about 100 to 120 miles as the crow flies.) Clear enough that it's a preset in the car. The signal just booms across the middle part of the state.

Huge signal. You can probably hear it for 125 miles or so down the FL coast off-shore, and it frequently comes in around Charleston, SC in DX. Except for the times I can get West Palm Beach stations and the rare Miami, it's about the farthest regular catch I get from the south.

Last I checked www.radio-locator.com , I think that WPCV is the only station in FL that can lay claim to being the **only** FL station on it's FM frequency (in this case, 97.5), including LPFMs & translators. All other FM frequencies oughta have at least 2 or 3 stations, even if only translators!

That alone should explain the wide coverage! We know that FL is a big state!

Nah, that's not our fault....

On a good day Tropo-wise in the Florida Keys, Love 97 in Nassau & one of the Radio Taino's in Cuba can eke in a signal on 97.5....but so can WPCV!

Of course in Pensacola/FWB, they can be served by WABB-FM in Mobile.

Our low power 97.3 is off the air. (I don't know why)

WPCV is a mostly nice signal in Sa-ra-so-ta! Not a local, but it can be picked up on the beaches and gets better as you go east.

When 97.3 is on air, then WPCV is more challenging.

I've never been able to get it in Ocala with a listenable signal.
After you get out of The Villages headed twoard belle view, WSKY starts comeing in.
Now in The Villages proper, WSKY is the weaker signal, and WPCV in the car comes in with fadeing in spots.
On a home unit, both 97.5 and 97.3 can be gotten depending apon the placement of radio and antenna.
Both have been known to be blocked by DXing of trop (forget the calls) alturnative 97X out of Holiday I think is the city.

In the car a few years back I could have it on WPCV till about Exit 358 on I-75. 8 Miles North of Ocala. Then WSKY would take over. I could also have it on in the car getting all the way to Inglis on US-19. My father used to do a lot of traveling. However that was a while back and I'm not sure that's the case now.

That signal can travel far. The only other station I have that kind of luck with is Orlando's own Sunny FM.

Well, despite the fact that 97.5 WABB-FM's tower is in Mobile, it has incredible coverable in Pensacola and even to Ft. Walton Beach. But your point is well-taken, CD.

Once there was an allocation of 97.5 to Everglades City (SE of Naples or so), but it moved to 98.1. Whether it's on is anybody's guess. There's even an assignment of 88.1 there (WBGY), but I don't think it ever has come on.

So WPCV survived that one.

BTW heard WPCV *and* Wild 94.1 in the Keys (although I wanted the 94.1 in La Habana) yesterday. Oh well.

Picking up WPCV in the Keys is very impressive. I can usually pick it up in Lake Worth during even mild tropo, but I have never picked it up south of say, Delray Beach. Good catch, CD!

Is this the only 97.5 in all of Florida?
Yes. Centrally located and a killer signal.
