WPCV

Just getting around to asking this question? What is the reason for the recent spike in WPCV's numbers in the Orlando Book? Orlando marketing now or what?

WPCV is the dominant country station in SW Orange County and Osceola. Very possible (as mentioned above), a higher number of diaries sent to these parts.

Radio-X

WPCV has a very strong signal throughout the city...why doesn't WPCV try to compete with K92.3. 92.3 is stale last I heard and not as crisp as WPCV nor do they have the personality or jingles or music presentation...it is time for WPCV to at least try to bring down WWKA more or beat them!

Mr. Red Bull,

The reasons WPCV would not come into Orlando is simple. WPCV already tried once some years ago to come in and do so. They even set up a satellite office in Orlando but failed miserably because they do not cover the entire DMA. Going northeast they do not have a Grade A signal.

In Spanish, WNUE (98.1) is a Tutusville station painting themselves to be an Orlando market station. WRUM comes in and starts their Tropical station with a signal that covers the entire DMA and then some, and WNUE ratings suffer a sharp decline by default on signal.

On a smaller scale, WOKB has been the only Gospel format Orlando has seen and been in the market forever. WRMQ flips to Gospel running a satellite feed with a stronger signal and picks up ratings quick as a result solely on signal.

Remember, you have to cover almost the entire DMA to have decent ratings in the Orlando market.

Lots of diaries probably fell west or southwest in the Orlando DMA.

You need a stick in or near town to topple a station like WWKA. Who knows, maybe WOCL should consider that, although they don't cover the Melbourne part of the DMA.

That's my take on the spike...

Clear Channel still has yet to announce the one FM property they're going to sell off here in Orlando, if that's even still in the works. That yet-to-be-announced station could always relaunch as something else, and take on WWKA.

PCV bring down K92FM??? Are you kidding me? You must have rocks in your head. Like the personality of PCV is more entertaining than K92FM. There's a reason why its a small market station.

I really don't think this market could handle two country stations. It's not like it was 20 years ago. Urban and Hispanic take a giant chunk out of the numbers.

I tend to listen to WOGK/93.7 out of Ocala/Gainesville or WKRO/93.1 from Daytona personally since they carry JB&B's morning show now, but I mainly do it for the same reasons I see you pointing out about WWKA. To me, WWKA's overall performance hasn't really been great since Bison left IMHO, and lacks the rotation and vast selection heard on WOGK any day of the week, not just Saturday nights. Down in Lakeland, WPCV itself has a slightly different playlist than most country stations, sounding more exclusive than even the other ones that play the older/Gold stuff.

As far as this market of Orlando, we really haven't seen a second country outlet since the days of WCFB/94.5 (B 94.5) which was a sister station of K-92. It died when it became too popular and started taking away a huge chunk of audience away from K-92 if I recall. But WTKS has been trending downwards. WOCL has been there in the lows for almost a year now, and honestly JRR is beating the crap out of them. How many other stations need to dive down into the cesspool before we get one new attempt at something better to listen to in this area?

Hey OrlandoGM:

I'm sure signal isn't the only reason WRMQ did better. Any satelitte format sounds better then that crap they call WOKB.

They stream now too, www.wokbradio.com

Good call, Orlando GM.

We had a similar problem with WOTS when I was there 10 years ago. Our playlist went deep on 70s Oldies at a time when it wasn't available elsewhere in the market. On Saturday nights, we went deep on the 60s and broadcast "The Saturday Night Cruise." An interesting alternative to the repetition on Cool 105.9.

Programming was entertaining and fun to listen to. But we had no ratings. Reason? An AM signal from Kissimmee that was weak during the day and non-existent at night if you were more than a few miles from the transmitter. If the signal isn't loud on a cheap radio, they're not going to listen.

The owners threw in the towel and sold to a Spanish broadcaster. This worked, due to the large Hispanic population in Osceola Co. and thus within the primary reach of the small signal.

An excellent point. Owner Hall Communications apparantly learned it's lesson and decided to focus on it's local audience. That loyalty has been returned in spades, as it often is the ONLY station earning double digit ratings numbers in the Lakeland/Winter Haven (Polk County) market. Why would you want to compete and be the number two or three country station in either Tampa/St. Petersburg or Orlando when you can be king of the hill in your own decent sized market? While Hall could possibly make slightly more money from the higher rates they could charge, the actual amount would be minimal.

Besides, when you really look at it, Polk County is actually UNDERSERVED. There are only three commercial FMs licensed to Polk County; WPCV, sister station "Max 98.3" WWRZ (licensed to Fort Meade, it was formerly known as "The Rose"), and "Smooth Jazz" 94.1 WSJT (licensed to Lakeland, it is owned by CBS Radio and focuses on Tampa/St. Petersburg).

BTW: I found a nice, humourous virtual tour of the Hall Communications building in downtown Lakeland on it's Web site. It's worth a look at http://www.halllakeland.com/NewTour/TourEnter.htm

Besides Hall, IMHO the only truly good broadcaster in Polk County is Thornburg Communications, a family company that operates WWBF-AM 1130 in Bartow http://www.wwbf.com/. Although they run a satellite oldies format, WWBF does quite a bit of local programming that to many would seem a throwback to days gone by. Yeah, we're talking about Bartow HS sports and a hugely popular morning "Shopper" call-in show hosted by the owner's son/CE (He was also our contract CE when I worked at Winter Haven's WHNR in the 1990s), but people listen loyally...and it makes money. A number of other broadcasters, including some of the big boys, can listen and learn about quality from a simple family-run operation in Bartow, Florida.

WPCV has had a CP for several years to move to a much higher stick, kicking their HAAT from around 1000 feet to around 1500 feet. That would improve their signal significantly everywhere--including Orlando. If they finally made the move, that might account for the uptick in ratings.

Hall runs some pretty good mid-market radio stations, and a couple of long-dominant Country outfits: PCV and WOKO up in godforsaken Burlington, Vermont. In Lakeland, WPCV has racked up something like 18 years of #1 books--the last glitch coming (if I recall correctly) in '87, when the old WVFM clipped 'em by a share. Last time they lost in Country was way the hell back in 1981, when the old 54/WGTO slipped past them for about 15 minutes...

But to become the Country King of Orlando, Hall would need to crack out millions in promotional money and do it for 4 or 5 years. And that ain't gonna happen!

CC hasn't announced what station they plan to sell because this all hinges on the vote to sell to the investment company. That vote is still several weeks away.

What WPCV/Hall is doing in Lakeland is right on target with what should be going on in American radio. Super-serve your core audience and the rest will fall into place. Their success as a "local" station proves you don't have to pretend to be a big city station to get great ratings, which translates into $$$. Lakeland/Winter Haven is a nice sized market and right now, Hall owns it.
