WPEN 950 AM Major announcement tomorrow

Julius, you seemed to be tied into the Philly market what do you think it is?

Not connected at all to the Philly market myself...
...but if I were to take a stab, I would guess that they were adding Dan Patrick's new syndicated show to the lineup.

The Radio Racket I-Team has the info on tomorrow's announcement.

The "950 Morning Show" will announce tomorrow morning that they will be joined once a week by Eagles Defensive Back Brian Dawkins throughout the upcoming season. It will be a weekly call-in on Monday's (or Tuesday's if the Eagles play on Monday Night).

There are also some changes coming to the station's line-up.

The Jim Rome Show is OUT! (Please hold the applause)

The 700 Level Sports Fanatics will move to the mid-day slot. Not sure of the exact time, but I'm guessing it will remain Noon-3pm, which means that we will still be without the 4th hour of The Tony Bruno Show.

I have not heard what will take over the 7-11pm block now vacated by the 700 Level. It would be great to get another local show, but if the station plans on going after the Phillies contract for next season, I don't know how well that would work out with the show being bumped 162 times a year for a ballgame.

I hope with the move to mid-days that they dump the horribly verbose name of "The 700 Level Sports Fanatics". Just call it "Mays & Yannacone" or "Harry & Jamie Mid-Days".

I'm glad that the station is making this move and hopefully starting to pull away from more of the satellite shows. It's the only way that the station will EVER get a chance to compete with WIP. Truthfully though, I think they are going to need to score a big name from WIP, or a former 'IP host like Mike Missanelli, if they are even going to make a dent in WIP's ratings. Yes, they do have Jody Mac, but Jody was out of the market (for the most part) for a couple of years before coming back to town. Ideally, I'd like to see Jody back in mid-days, as it's just where I liked him best. I listen to him everyday during drive-time and would listen to him whenever he's on. I don't know if anyone, even Missanelli, could take away a lot of audience from Eskin, but the only way to do it, in my opinion, is to have an all-local line-up (with the exception of keeping Bruno, as he talks a lot of Philly-centric stuff on his national show). We'll see how Jody does now losing that boat-anchor of a lead-in, Rome.

Rumors in our area (Atlanta) had them maybe making a run at John Kincade who does afternoon drive on 680 The Fan.
He also has his own nationally syndicated show on ESPN Radio.
He is a Philly guy and reportedly is in a contract year. I know that he had ties to the first PD at 950 from mutually working at ESPN radio. I don't know if he knows the new leadership at 950 or not.
Kincade has been a part of the top show in this market for seven years as part of a team, but seems to be doing a lot more solo stuff filling in for Cowherd and Patrick and Greenberg often.
He works for a rival station and just seems more fitted for a tough NE market than this one, even though he has had great success.
The Two Live Stews are up against his show and Kincade's beats them almost every ratings book, but I think that is based on the ethnic component of the Stews being very high.
A colleague of mine in Philly tells me often that he feels Kincade will be in Philly in the next few years and he knows him well.
I know that it would be a step up for 950. When we travel in town (my wife attended school there, Penn '84) I monitor both sports stations and they could both use some new blood.

Perhaps the new night show will only be 7-10pm, allowing SR950 to pick up the full 4 hours of JT the Brick. OK, he's a New Yorker, so he disses the Eagles on occasion, but his callers are all thought out. It's not like a typical call-in show, where host and caller have a back and forth, but rather the caller gives a soliloquy (sp?) and then Brick responds. Also, his update anchor, Tomm Looney, is nuts!! He takes the whole Chris Berman "create a whacky nickname" to a new level. It's a must-listen. Think of the show like Ferrall, only with talent!!!!

So Rome out, Rome protege in? After all, Brick was the first "Smackoff" winner...

I may be wrong, have been once or twice, but I thought that JT the Brick HATED the Eagles. Indifference would be one thing, but obvious disdain would not go well in this market.

WPEN flipping back to oldies, or pop standards?
Dropping HD radio?
Now those would be a MAJOR announcements, not the very minor stuff discussed here. Minutia, schedule changes, minor program adjustments, or a new guest once a week do not qualify as a major announcements.

Dropping HD Radio is not something I think they'd announce to listeners. A format change, yes. Schedule change, yes.

To however many dedicated 950 listeners there are, it'd be a pretty big deal if one of their favorite shows was being moved to a different time, or if it were being removed from the schedule altogether.

Don't shoot the folks talking about the story! That station is who couched it as a "Major Announcement".

Plus, I'd argue that having Brian Dawkins on once a week (on the morning show and also on the Monday Night "day after the game show" is a pretty big announcement. A station that has almost non-existant ratings gets arguably the biggest star on the team to do a weekly remote broadcast. People will come out just to see Dawk and, in turn, may start to check out the station. At least they're giving it a shot and trying to build an audience.

I'd be very surprised if they don't start to show a little better in the ratings.

John is a name that gets bounced around here every once in a while. He's done some fill-in at WIP in the past. He was on one time when I was working at WIP and I learned that he was from the same town that I was and that he used to be friends with a guy that lived down the street from me. They used to play stickball behind our house (they were in High School at the time) and I would sit and watch them when I got home from school (I was 6 or 7). He is a really nice guy, and a damn good host. I know his "act" probably doesn't go over well down in Atlanta. He has some Eskin-type qualities and would be a great guy to slide in against "the King".

950 definitely needs a kick-start to get things moving, and unfortunately I don't think moving the 700 Club to mid-days is going to do it.

Had a Philly buddy slam me for the Kincade post. To quote, "how in the heck would 950 ever get the money up to be able to afford him?". Dumb specualtion on my part. Major market afternoon drive host for over 7 years plus the ESPN gig, which I am guessing he would have to drop if he went to 950. I guess it was stupid and my bad!
