Yo General!
Thanks for thinking of me!
I am not in the Philly market so I'm a little out of touch with how WIP sounds now. I am not a Sports Fanatic and probably not a good judge of content on a sports station, but I am qualified I think to make a comment on the sensibility of the 'PEN change. I know WPEN upgraded the signal, but I can't get it here in the Clearwater Beach area!!! If they have a good signal, and good talent, and good promotion of the product, AND Tony Bruno, I think the station has a great shot. Remember General...radio today is about revenue, not ratings. Ratings are good, a desirable demo is better...and maximized revenue is best! WPEN, even in it's nostalgia heyday, had new studios built designed for talk radio. The ability to do talk was a few buttons away. That studio rebuild was in the late 80s! So the seed of talk radio was already in the minds of the big guys, just in case the nostalgia format "beans" started to decline. I wish WPEN the best with the format. Greater Media always treated me well and I only have good things to say about the company...although they should stay out of the oldies business in Philly!!! I still feel a "connection" with them. I spent 20 years with the company and would love to see them have another success with WPEN. But in the reality of radio, some people are always beat up a bit in the shuffle. I wish Jim Nettleton, Christy and the rest of the crew all the best.
When the format flips General, please post your comments. I'd love to hear about the change and how the station sounds doing sports.
All the best!
Charlie
